Carson Mencken

F. Carson Mencken is a professor of sociology and the chair of the sociology department at Baylor University. He also serves as the Faculty Athletic Representative for Baylor Athletics, a role he has served in since Sept. of 2019.  
 
Mencken came to Baylor in 2002 as an associate professor in the department of sociology, a role he served in through May of 2006. He has served as a professor for the department since 2006 and added department chair responsibilities in 2015. Mencken was also the director of the Baylor Regional Survey from 2003-2015. 
 
Mencken earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology with summa cum laude honors from College of Charleston in 1987, his master’s degree in sociology from LSU in 1989 and his Ph.D. in sociology from LSU in 1994. 
 
He focuses his research on several topics, including civic engagement, religiosity and research methods. 
 
He is an active member of the American Sociological Association, the Rural Sociological Society, the Southwestern Sociological Association and the National Diversity Council. 
 
The Mencken family is actively involved with the Dayspring Baptist Church of Waco.
