SOUNDS OF MONEY - Don Riddle, captain of the 1959 Baylor baseball team and also a successful Houston lawyer, has contributed more than $10,000 to a scholarship fund in honor of retiring Waco ISD Choir and Fine Arts Director Ken Howard. In addition, Riddle, who was a hotshot player for Waco High School and a participant in WHS choral activities, is helping fund a concert in Howard's honor. When not making money or giving it away, Riddle is busy planning his annual invitation-only Tired Bears outing on his Horseshoe Bay spread near Marble Falls . . . All Baylor letter-winners in North and Central Texas have been invited to a reunion in connection with the upcoming Big XII Baseball Tournament at The BallPark in Arlington. The event is planned for Thursday, May 22 - but the time will be determined by when the Bears play their first game. The $15-per-plate buffet will be held at the LaQuinta Conference Center, 825 North Watson Road (Highway 360) in Arlington. Those confused can get more details from host Bill Ferguson (972-234-0508) or the reliable Reba Cooper at the "B" Association office (254-710-3045). They would appreciate RSVPs by Friday, May 17. Winning the tournament would certainly enhance Baylor's chances of hosting regional games later this month . . .
THE NAME GAME - Anyone fretting over the whereabouts of Lifetime "B" Association member Mickey Grant, a Baylor freshman flash in the 1960s, will be happy to know that today he is a licensed clinical social worker at the Veteran's Hospital in Salem, Va., a suburb of Roanoke. Now a marathon runner, Mickey qualified this year for the Big One in Boston . . .Shreveport resident Dale Sandifer, who played baseball at Baylor in the mid-1950s, reports that he was very impressed after watching Sophia Young, a Baylor women's basketball recruit, in a number of games this year. She performed for Evangel High School in Shreveport and was named to represent Louisiana in the USA Junior Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, this summer. Sandifer says Sophia scored 29, 22, and 31 points in three state tournament games and was All-City, All-District and Class 5A All-State. Sounds like happy times ahead for the Lady Bears . . . Ben Saage has been the associate superintendent for Business at Connally ISD in Waco since 1995. If the Saage name rings a bell it's probably because you remember his late father Reuben, a battering-ram fullback for Baylor in the mid-1950s. Saage went on to coach football at La Vega High in Waco before dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 1971. Ben, wife Audrey and their two children, Reuben and Rachel, live in Elm Mott . . .
TWIN PIPES - "B" Association Executive Vice President Emeritus Dutch Schroeder is a big fan of The Baylor Line, the award-winning magazine of the Baylor Alumni Association. And he particularly enjoys scanning the magazine's "Down the Years" section for items that he can connect to Baylor athletics and pass on to the "B" Line. For instance, you may have read on page 66 of the Spring issue of the Baylor Line that Glenn Pipes has accepted a call to the East Fork Baptist Church in McKinney. After getting a BA degree in 1968 and a JD in 1971, Pipes practiced law in Odessa for 28 years before entering Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth. He was a football manager for the 1965-67 Bears . . . But don't confuse Glenn with Greg Pipes, an All-American tackle for Baylor during the same period. Greg moved to Fort Worth after getting his law degree from Baylor and is now a member of the Tarrant County district attorney's staff. He occasionally has breakfast with his teammates from the mid 1960s who meet every other month. . . Robert L. Neill who received a BBA degree in 1962 and a MBA in 1963, currently lives in Waco, but works in Temple with Materials Transportation Co. He was a trainer-manager with the athletic department from 1959-1962, working with the baseball and football teams. Bob and his wife Frances were among International Mission Board volunteers who toured the Ukraine last summer . . .
