When Rev. Bill Glass, the former Baylor All-American who had a wonderful career in the National Football League and is undergoing similar success with his current prison ministry, was named a BU Distinguished Alumnus recently he became the 21st letter winner to be so honored.
That is the number reported by Dutch Schroeder, the executive vice president emeritus of the Baylor "B" Association and a man who knows more about BU sports history than most folks know about eating.
Schroeder also reports that Earl C. Hankamer, who lettered in 1914 in basketball, and Gordon Teal, who won his letter in track in 1926, were the first two athletes to gain the awards.
As a matter of fact, they were the only two individuals inducted in the first Distinguished Alumni class in 1965.
The complete list of honored Baylor graduates who have participated in sports at the university includes:
1969 - Dr. Hannibal (Joe) Jaworski (track, 1920-21)
1969 - Thomas (T. J.) Harrell (football, 1915)
1973 - Ross M. Sams (football, 1918-19)
1975 - William Stone (Red) Wells (football, basketball, baseball, 1930-32)
1976 - Robert S. Sparkman (golf, 1929-30)
1981 - Mills Cox (football, 1921)
1982 - Charles Barrow (tennis, 1940-41-42)

1985 - Gayle Galloway (football, 1949-50-51)

And in case you did not notice, so far the Distinguished List is an all-male roster.
NOTES OF CONCERN - Condolences go out to former Baylor football coach Grant Teaff following the death of his father Bill Teaff on Feb. 9. The senior Teaff, 93, was a life-long resident of West Texas. Services were held at Feb. 11 at the First Baptist Church in Snyder. "Daddy Bill" is survived by his wife Inez, son Grant, daughter-in-law Donell, daughter Juanez, son-in-law Dr. Carroll Carver, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Football Coaches Foundation and anyone wishing to express personal thoughts to Coach Teaff may mail them to his home address: 8265 Forest Ridge, Waco, Texas 76712 . . . The Baylor Family was stunned at news of the death in Corpus Christi of Jean Storm, who along with husband Ralph, was a staunch supporter of Baylor and all its athletic endeavors. She passed away shortly after suffering an aneurysm last week
On a personal note: Thanks to all who inquired about my well being after I received a pacemaker on Feb. 4. Two days later I felt fit enough to attend a luncheon in Houston honoring new Baylor football coach Guy Morriss. I must admit, however, that I stayed close to my friend Dr. Jerry Marcontell, one of Baylor's finest offensive ends ever. But my confidence was challenged when another guest at Marcontell's table reminded me that Dr. Jerry is a retired gynecologist . . .
CLOSE OUTS -While plans remain sketchy, former Baylor football players may get a chance to show their stuff in an alumni extravaganza that will help wind up Baylor's spring football practice. Coach Morriss hinted during his Houston trip that age classifications might be involved. The action will occur on April 12, the same date as the annual Green & Gold game. It's all about Morriss' vision for "togetherness" - as he goes about the challenging task of bringing Baylor's football program back into prominence. Following his Houston stop, Morriss headed to Dallas and Forth Worth and will be in San Antonio on Feb. 24, speaking at a 6:30 p.m. reception at First Baptist Church. For reservations, contact Byron Bexley (210-657-5122). Morris will meet with BU fans in Austin on Feb. 27. The dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Hyde Park Baptist Church. To make reservations, call 1-800-BAYLOR-U, Ext. 6 . . . And it is not too late for former BU athletes in the Houston area to be included in the "B" Association reception and meal planned for 4 p.m. Saturday at the downtown Houston Center Club, 1100 Caroline (713-654-8980). Coordinator Chip Hubbard says tickets will be available at the door: $15 for adults and $8 for children and parking is free. The event is linked to the annual Astros College Baseball Classic. Baylor meets Rice at 7 p.m. Saturday at Minute Maid Park after opening with the University of Houston at 3 p.m. Friday. The Bears play Louisiana Lafayette at 3 p. m. Sunday . . .
