Murphy Making Most of World Series Opportunity

DAVID KAYE Former Baylor baseball player David Murphy (BU 2001-03) became the first Baylor alum to play in the World Series since 1987 when Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington called on him as a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth inning in game 1 of the 2010 Fall Classic. Murphy came through with a RBI single, cutting the Giants lead to 8-4, but the Rangers weren't able to cut further into the deficit, falling 11-4. The RBI was the first ever by a former Baylor player in the World Series. Murphy was got the starting nod in left field for game 2, and though he went 0-for-3, he drew a walk in the ninth inning. With the start, Murphy became the first former Bear position player to start a game in the World Series. Dave Danforth (White Sox) pitched in relief in game 4 of the 1917 series. Mule Watson (New York Giants) started game 1 of the 1923 series on the mound and earned a save in relief in game three of the 1924 series. Ted Uhlaender (Cincinnati Reds) was used as a pinch hitter in games 1, 2, 5 and 7 of the 1972 series. Lee Tunnell (St. Louis Cardinals) came out of the bullpen in games 2 and 6 of the 1987 series. While he's certainly enjoying the chance to play in the World Series, Murphy is also taking advantage of the opportunity to be heard on a national stage. With Postseason Duo, Baylor Baseball Among Nation's Best

DAVID KAYE For the first time ever, two former Baylor baseball players played in the same Major League Baseball postseason. Kelly Shoppach of the Tampa Bay Rays (BU 1999-2001) and David Murphy of the Texas Rangers (BU 2001-03) both saw action in the 2010 MLB playoffs. Murphy's Rangers defeated Shoppach's Rays in five games in the American League Division Series, and though Shoppach played in three of the five games and Murphy saw action in two contests, the duo never played in the same game.
However, Shoppach and Murphy are one of just three duos of former college teammates to compete against each other during the 2010 postseason. Tommy Hunter (Rangers) and David Robertson (Yankees) both played at Alabama, and Joba Chamberlain (Yankees) and Brian Duensing (Minnesota Twins) were on the same team at Nebraska. In fact, Baylor is one of only 11 collegiate programs in the nation with multiple players competing in the 2010 MLB postseason. Here's the full list: - Alabama (Tommy Hunter & David Robertson)

Murphy's Home Run Makes Baylor History

DAVID KAYE Former Baylor baseball All-American David Murphy (BU 2001-03) made a bit of history on Saturday when he hit a solo home run in the second inning of the Texas Rangers 7-2 win over the New York Yankees in game two of the 2010 American League Championship Series. Murphy's blast was the first-ever MLB postseason home run by a Baylor alum. It was also the first time a Baylor alum has scored twice in a MLB postseason game and the first-ever RBI.

Also of note, the 2010 American League Division Series that pitted the Rangers against the Tampa Bay Rays was the first time two former Bears played in the same game of a postseason series. Even though a former Baylor player saw action in all five games of the series, Kelly Shoppach and Murphy didn't both play in any single game. Shoppach played games 1, 2 and 5, while Murphy played in games 3 and 4. Baseball to Hold Inaugural Coaches Select Series

DAVID KAYE The Baylor baseball team will hold its inaugural Coaches Select Series Tuesday through Thursday this week. The Coaches Select Series is a trio of intrasqaud games pitting a team of some of the Bears' top hitters against a team of some of the top pitchers. Games on Tuesday and Wednesday will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday's series finale is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch. All three games of the Coaches Select Series are open to the public, and there is no charge for admission.
