BU’s Rakhmanchik extends her double-digit kill matches to 21
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – No. 17 Baylor volleyball took the opening set, but Utah claimed the next three to take a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Bears (8-4, 0-2 Big 12) led in both kills (53-52) and digs (49-44) in a match that featured 24 ties and eight lead changes. The two battled closely, with three of the four sets decided by five points or fewer.
Ksenia Rakhmanchik led all players with 15 kills, extending her streak of double-digit kill matches to 21, which dates back to last season. Nadiya Johnson hit .381 with 10 kills, her second straight double-digit outing after a career-high 20 at BYU. Bailey Warren added nine kills, and Victoria Davis finished with eight kills and a match-high six total blocks.
Isabela Haggard contributed 41 assists and added six kills on a .357 hitting percentage, along with seven digs, an ace and a block. Tehani Ulufatu led the back row with 14 digs, while Morgan Madison chipped in 12.
RUNDOWN
BU and Utah traded rallies throughout the early part of the first frame, before Johnson put the Bears in front 9-8, and Davis followed with a solo block to create some separation. Baylor used a 3-0 run, fueled by Rakhmanchik's ace, to go up 15-11. Late in the frame, a Davis kill, a Utah error, and a Haggard kill pushed the lead to 23-17. The Bears closed out set one hitting .591, with Davis recording five of her kills as BU took a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Baylor quickly answered a 5-1 early deficit with back-to-back Warren kills, as part of a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. After BU led 16-13, the Utes answered with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 19-16 lead. Rakhmanchik and Warren, a Taylor Crain ace followed, and a Rakhmanchik kill helped the Bears claw back and tie it 22. The Utes would ultimately knot the match 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second set.
Baylor built its biggest lead of the third on a 4-0 run that included a Jules Hernandez ace, then went up 14-10 behind three Rakhmanchik kills. Utah worked its way back and tied it 20-20 on an ace. Two Utah attack errors put Baylor ahead 22-21, but the Utes scored three straight to claim a 2-1 advantage, winning set three 25-23.
The two traded the lead until the Utes pulled away on the back side of the frame, 20-15. The Bears made one more push with a Warren kill and Haggard and Hernandez aces, fueling a Baylor 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 21-19, but Utah held on and closed out the match 25-20.
