Singles players dominate against the Aggies, winning all four points for BU
WACO, Texas – No. 19 Baylor men's tennis took down No. 8 Texas A&M at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center in hard-fought matches on Monday night, ending in a 4-1 domination.
The No. 19 Bears battled hard against the top-10 Aggies, falling behind during doubles but responding quickly and pulling ahead to win all four points in their singles matches. Monday night's upset marked BU's first ranked win of the season and first top-10 win since last indoor season where the Bears took down No. 7 Duke in the 2025 ITA Indoor Championships.
THE RUNDOWN
A&M took an early lead, winning two doubles courts to clinch the opening point. The Bears fought hard, with duo Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz being the first to finish, defeating their opponents 6-2. The Aggies quickly responded by pulling ahead on both Courts One and Three, securing the first point.
However, Baylor dominated the singles matches, starting with an intense 7-5 win for Devin Badenhorst on Court One, pulling the Bears ahead to win the first sets on all six courts.
Velcz won the first point for the Bears on Court Two with a 6-4, 6-4 win, followed closely by Luc Koeing on Court Five in a three-set showdown, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, to give Baylor the lead with two points.
Connor Van Schalkwyk on Court Three completed a hard-won tie break, 6-4, 7-6(3), to put the Bears at 3-1 over the Aggies. Alexandru Chirita's explosive three-set win against Tiago Pires on Court Four, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, handed Baylor its fourth point and pulled it ahead to win the upset.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
On today's crowd…
"I have to thank the crowd. I mean, it was an incredible environment. You know, it's funny, I think some of the best matches we've had have been on Monday nights, but it's not a traditional night to go out for a sporting event. And so huge credit to everybody that came out. I mean, the Greek life was here, cooking out … the entire women's soccer team was here, really awesome effort. The energy was insane."
On singles…
"When you take all six first sets off of the top 10 teams in the country. That is an incredible, incredible effort. And so everybody showed up. Of course, being a great team that they are, [Texas A&M] fought back. I think they split on four courts. But we did a good job of not letting it get away from us."
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor will be staying in Waco for the ITA National Indoor Championship, starting on Friday at 3:30 pm and continuing through Sunday.
