BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 20 Baylor volleyball earned a 3–1 victory over LSU on Sunday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, capping the opening weekend with a 2-1 record.
The Bears hit a season-high .287 as a team, led by Manu Bibinbe's 17 kills, while Grace Carroll added a season-high 14 to join Bibinbe in double figures. Setter Bri Denney paced the offense for the second time in three days with 20 assists.
Defensively, Morgan Madison tied a match high with 12 digs, while Gabbi Essix tallied a match-high six blocks, pacing BU's 10-5 advantage at the net.
Baylor controlled the first set with a 25-20 victory and looked to be cruising to another win in set two, leading 18-14. But the home-standing Tigers stormed back with an 11-5 run to knot the match at one.
The Bears responded, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in set three and never looked back, taking back control of the match with a 25-20 win to go up 2-1.
LSU would not go quietly, however, as the Bayou Bengals pushed the No. 20 Bears in the fourth set, trimming a 21-16 BU lead to just 24-23, before Bibinbe sealed the match with her 17th kill of the afternoon.
Baylor improved to 2-1 on the season, while LSU fell to 1-2. BU returns to action on Thursday against Northwestern in its home opener at the Ferrell Center. The match is one of three for the Bears as part of the Baylor Invitational and gets going with a 6 p.m. first serve.
