Bragging rights on the line when #22 Baylor VB treks to #20 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Long before the season, Baylor redshirt sophomore setter Harley Kreck had Nov. 26 circled on her calendar.
With family bragging rights on the line, Kreck and the 22nd-ranked Baylor volleyball team (16-9, 11-6) will face the No. 20 TCU Horned Frogs (19-9, 9-7) and head coach Jason Williams at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Schollmaier Arena. Kreck's uncle, Williams spent seven years on the Baylor staff and helped the Bears win the 2019 Big 12 title and make their lone Final Four appearance.
"I reserved 23 tickets that I sent to my mom, and that's just on my side," said Kreck, who is sixth in the Big 12 in conference-only games with 9.36 assists per set. "This is always my favorite game. Just from the family dynamic, it's just good, friendly competition. I'm super pumped."
Baylor can clinch a top-five finish in the Big 12 with its third-straight win over TCU. But there's also the matter of a scheduled post-match Thanksgiving dinner at Schollmaier Arena.
"We are actually catering some Tex-Mex, and we're just going to do our family Thanksgiving up in the TCU arena," said Kreck, whose mother (Sarah Sivertson Kreck), aunt (Cory Sivertson Williams) and cousin (Callie Williams) all played at Baylor. "Someone's going to be in a bad mood. Better not be me."
Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre said her teammates "love Harley, and they know she's going to spend Thanksgiving (with her family) immediately after the match."
"We want her to enjoy it and not (TCU)," McGuyre said. "We want her to be able to nudge everybody else and say, 'Hey, you know what I'm thankful for? I'm thankful for that great match and the win we were able to have.' Family is bigger than wins and losses on all fronts, but we want Harley to have that, for sure."
In her first year as the Bears' starting setter, Kreck had 41 assists and 17 digs in a five-set win over the Horned Frogs in the conference opener two months ago at the Ferrell Center.
"I know they're going to come in with a fire in their belly, because they did lose to us the first time, and they probably hate us," Kreck said. "Definitely, the same level of respect, the same preparation. All that is the same. We're going to try to motivate us and play clean and see what happens."
Led by 5-9 sophomore outside hitter Evan Hendrix (4.41 kills per set) and 6-3 senior middle blocker Sarah Silvester (1,31 blocks per set), the Horned Frogs are trying to reach the 20-win mark for the second-straight year under Williams.
"Absolutely love Jason. He was such a huge part of our success here," McGuyre said. "And he's doing great things at TCU. You still want good things for good people, and Jason is one of those. Even when we won here, we had alumni weekend, and Jason was hanging out with his wife and the rest of the alumni.
"I know, playing Jason, the areas that we've got to get better in, he's really going to go after. And he's going to be ready for the areas where we feel we're strong."
With Wednesday's match wrapping up the Bears' regular season, Baylor volleyball will host a watch party at 4 p.m. Sunday at The Brazos Landing. Open to the first 100 people, the dinner is $25 per person, with registration available here.
