Fifth-seeded Bears advance to Round of 16 for fourth time in program history
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Withstanding a relentless second-half attack by the fourth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers, the fifth-seeded Baylor soccer team had a first-half penalty-kick goal by senior midfielder Tyler Isgrig hold up in a 1-0 victory in Thursday's second-round NCAA Tournament game at Notre Dame's Alumni Stadium.
Advancing to the Round of 16 for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2018, the Bears (14-4-4) will face Ohio State (10-4-6) in Sunday's third-round game at 2 p.m. ET, 1 p.m. CT. Unseeded, the Buckeyes upset No. 1 national seed Notre Dame, 1-0, in double-overtime.
"Oh my gosh, it's amazing," said senior defender Hannah Augustyn, who helped the Bears record their 12th shutout of the season, "especially after building the way we did for the past four years. This is something special. This being my last year playing at Baylor, it's just been more than I could ever imagine. And with the team, the culture, everybody around me, it just makes it even more special."
Controlling possession early, the Bears got off four shots in the first 20 minutes and almost took the lead when Isgrig's shot from the right side hit off the frame on the far side in the 17th minute.
"At that moment in the game, I felt like we were doing a really good job of winning on second balls," Isgrig said. "We were having a really good flow and good possession. And their lines weren't really stepping. So, I was like, 'We need to start testing the keeper.' I thought I was going to get it, but it's okay. That was a good look, though."
Baylor's Kai Hayes picked up a yellow card right at the midway point of the half, while Wisconsin (14-6-2) didn't get whistled for its first foul until the 41st minute.
But in the closing minute of the first half, the Badgers' Delaney Cox was called for a foul inside the penalty box when she undercut Augustyn on a ball in the air off a beautiful cross from Alysiah Lockett. Going immediately to video replay, the penalty kick was awarded to the Bears with just 34 seconds left in the opening frame.
"By the way Alysiah put her head down and was looking at me, I knew I could just go in the air and capitalize," Augustyn said. "And that's what happened. From there, I really don't know what happened. I kind of blacked out. I woke up, and the ref said, 'I'm going to go VR that.' And I was like, 'What?' She said it was for a PK, and I said, 'You go do that.'''
Facing the Badgers' Drew Stover, her former club team goalkeeper, Isgrig buried the PK past the diving Stover into the right side of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
"I just knew, if I used my power, then I should be okay," said Isgrig, who netted her 23rd career goal at Baylor and 29th of her collegiate career. "Fun fact, that was my club keeper. In high school, I went to (ECNL) nationals with her. So, I've hit PKs against her a lot of times. I went against her a lot of times in practice growing up, so it kind of felt like back in the day."
After an even first half that saw Wisconsin take one more shot (7-6), the Badgers kept numbers forward on their attacking end and dominated shots (13-4) and corners (7-2) over the final 45 minutes.
But goalkeeper Azul Alvarez and her back line were up to the task, getting several blocks from her defenders in the box and then coming up with a huge punch save in the 86th minute on a kick by Wisconsin's Ashley Martinez. It was Alvarez's 11th solo shutout of the season and second in a row in postseason play.
"I would have loved to have had a little bit more control in the second half," said Baylor coach Michelle Lenard, "but sometimes, you've got to do whatever it takes. As much as we were under pressure, I also felt like we stayed connected, we stayed organized and we won the duels that we needed to win. Bend, don't break, right? Sometimes, that's the way it's going to be."
Trying to advance to the Elite Eight for the third time in program history, the Bears will face unseeded Ohio State in the third round on Sunday back at Notre Dame's Alumni Stadium. The game will be streamed by ESPN+.
