Redshirt sophomore safety had career-high six tackles, game-changing pick six in win over K-State
WACO, Texas – Baylor football redshirt sophomore safety Jacob Redding has been named the Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the organization.
Redding made six tackles to match his career-high in Saturday's thrilling 35-34 victory over Kansas State and had a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown that put the Bears ahead with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter. With the Wildcats driving and having just converted on third down for the third time, Redding jumped in front of an Avery Johnson pass and returned it 66 yards to the house to swing the momentum and lift BU to a 32-31 advantage with 4:40 to go.
The interception marked Redding's team-leading second of the season and was the first INT returned for a touchdown by a Bear since Keaton Thomas did so in the 2024 lid-lifter against Tarleton.
Redding, a former walk-on from New Braunfels, Texas, has made four starts this season and recorded five or more tackles in three games. He had his first-career interception in Week 2's win at SMU, a pair of pass breakups in Week 4 against Arizona State and logged the game-changing pick six in the Week 6 win over K-State.
The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with an FBS football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department.
Most recently, Baylor's Josh Cameron was named a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy in 2024.
