Leading the nation in passing yards and TDs, should Robertson be in the Heisman talk?
Director of Sports Journalism Jerry Hill gives his three takeaways from Monday's weekly press conference with head coach Dave Aranda discussing the bye week and this week's rivalry matchup between the Bears (4-2, 2-1) and TCU (4-2, 1-2). Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, with the game broadcast by ESPN2:
- SAWYER FOR HEISMAN: While their personalities are on "different ends of the spectrum," Aranda said there are similarities between Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson and 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, who led LSU to an undefeated season and national championship. "In terms of a competitor, in terms of being up here all the time watching tape and putting time in, and in terms of having weapons and being able to get it to them and use them the right way, I think those things are right on," he said. As to whether Sawyer could be in the Heisman conversation, Aranda said, "I think so. He's going to continue to be in big moments where he's going to shine. I don't think there's going to be a moment that's going to be too big for him. And I think this team is going to fight for him, and they're not going to let him down. You put him in a situation where there's a chance to win it, he's going to win it."
- 'THE GUYS ARE HUNGRY': Similar to last year, when the Bears reeled off six-straight wins coming out of the bye week after a 2-4 start, Aranda said "the guys are hungry" despite winning four of their last five and being in the title chase at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. "I thought last year was kind of us against the world," he said. "It's kind of maybe that way still, but I think guys are hungry. Guys want to improve. They're looking for ways, they want to be coached, they want more, they want better. When it's like that, it kind of drives you as a coach to give it to them."
- SCOUTING TCU: Like Baylor, TCU's bell cow is quarterback Josh Hoover, who is second behind Robertson with 1,893 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. "They're explosive on offense," Aranda said. "When they don't turn the ball over (nine for the season), they are really effective and making explosive plays. They've got receivers that can catch the ball, make a guy miss and go the distance. And the quarterback is really calm and poised. He can beat you with his feet. I think the O-line is improving. The running backs, they've got a committee over there, but they're all very good players. Defensively, they pressure you. There is a game plan of the week that they've got, and it's going to be a challenge for us to run the ball versus all the movement that they've got."
