Bears fall in Ferrell to Mustangs in midweek match
WACO, Texas – The 18th-ranked Baylor volleyball team was led by Allie Sczech in a tough battle against SMU Tuesday night, but the Bears couldn't overcome and fell 3-0.
BU (5-2) dropped the match to the Mustangs (5-2), with set scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-16.
Sczech had six blocks and seven kills while Lauren Briseño recorded a team-high 12 digs against SMU. With her blocks on the night, Sczech reached a career total of 200.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
Allie Szech started the Bears off strong with a kill in the match's first point. An ace by Lauren Briseño broke the tie for Baylor, making it 4-3. Kendal Murphy secured a kill, bringing the set to 7–5. Jackie Barrett Frazier and Szech continued the fight with dumps over the net and kills at a crucial time when the Bears were in need. The Bears and Mustangs continued going back and forth as Briseño provided another ace, moving the scoreboard to a close 13-12 in favor of SMU. Elise McGhee brought the heat from the service line, bringing the score to 18-14, SMU. A strong block by Alicia Andrews held off the Mustangs. Szech achieved her 200th career block, but the Mustangs pushed hard and took the set with a score of 25-21.
Set 2
Prepared to come back and play hard, Sczech continued her success on the block with Victoria Davis to fight back. Shutting down the Mustang's run, Szech hit an unstoppable kill, bringing the score to 6-3 SMU. The Bears then found their footing and went on a nice four-point run with kills from Barrett Frazier, Murphy, and McGhee and an ace from Murphy. This tied the set at 7-7. The Bears and Mustangs then went back and forth for the lead for most of the set up until 14-14. Baylor didn't give up as they pushed to the last second of the set, but ended up falling 25-15.
Set 3
The Bears fought hard to rally in the third set with the first point made by a Sczech kill. The second block of the set by Bibinbe and Sczech shut down a Mustang run, bringing the score to 9-3 SMU. Another powerful block by the Bears brought by Davis and Murphy tried to lessen the gap but it was 12-5 SMU. Barrett Frazier tried to give a spark to her team by dumping the ball past the Mustang defense. A solo block by Bibinbe pushed Baylor, but SMU was still up 17-9. Sczech continued to lead the team with another kill. Murphy didn't let up as she got an ace for a career high three on the match. McGhee kept up the pace with two kills followed by another kill from Bibinbe. The Mustangs ended up taking the set and match with a final set score of 25-16.
