Bears take third loss in a row
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – No. 18 Baylor volleyball fell to Utah on Saturday at the Huntsman Center, 3-0.
The Bears (10-6, 2-3) couldn't hold off the Utes (15-2, 5-1), falling 25-21 in the first, 25-14 in the second and 25-21 in the third.
Baylor was led by Allie Sczech with eight kills, Lauren Briseño with seven digs, Jackie Barrett Frazier with 18 assists and three players with two blocks.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Utes started out ahead, 4-1, Elise McGhee scoring the Bears' lone point. It was her who ended a 3-0 scoring run by breaking the block, down by two. Setter Jackie Barrett Frazier dumped the ball at 5-3, and Allie Sczech joined the box score with a kill at 7-4. The Utes kept moving, Barrett Frazier dumping the ball again at 10-7 and starting a three-point run for BU, Alicia Andrew getting two kills in a row. Sczech helped keep the Bears close with a kill at 13-10 and again at 15-12. BU brought in Harley Kreck and Grace Carroll, Carroll immediately providing a spark with a kill to make it 17-14 and then 17-16. McGhee tied the teams up at 18-all for the first time in the set, Andrew putting Baylor ahead by one on the next play. Sczech and Andrew teamed up for a big block to go up by one again, then again with a kill from Kendal Murphy at 21-20. Coming down to the wire, the Bears called two timeouts, but the Utes came away with the set win 25-21 on a five-point run.
Set 2
The Bears started the set with a point and then went up 2-1 with Sczech getting the kill. Trading points, Sczech got the next kill at 4-3 and the next play was challenged successfully to result in a replay but Utah getting the point. The Utes took the lead 6-4, and the next play was challenged unsuccessfully by the Bears. It ended up being a six-point run by UU, Baylor calling timeout. It turned into an eight-point run, ended by a Utah service error at 11-5. However, the onslaught continued, becoming a 12-1 run for the Utes with a timeout. It continued with the third-consecutive ace from Utah's Emrie Satuala. The Bears got their next point by Carroll tooling the block, stopping the run at 16-6, Sophia Keene serving an ace next. Andrew got a kill at 20-9, then Barrett Frazier at 21-10 and Scech at 22-11. Victoria Davis got her first kill of the afternoon and Sczech served an ace, now down 10 at 23-13, Davis got another kill to stave off set point at 24-14. The damage had been done and the Utes took the set 25-14.
Set 3
The set began with a joust won by Utah, but Andrew got the first kill for BU and followed it with an ace. Davis got a kill and then Murphy, up 4-2. A run ensued from the Utes, going up 6-4 and ending with Murphy going line for the kill, down one at 6-5. Carroll got the kill at 8-6 and the Bears took a timeout at 11-6. Returning, McGhee had an emphatic kill. Sczech got the kill at 13-9, but errors continued to plague the Bears. Murphy started getting hot for BU, getting kills at 14-10 and then 15-11. Carroll looked to have tooled the block at 15-11 but the point went to Utah, McGuyre challenged, and the point was reversed. Carroll had her next kill at 18-12, then McGhee at 18-14, the comeback ensuing. A kill from Carroll, a block from Andrew and McGhee, followed by an ace by Lauren Briseño helped bring the Bears back into the conversation, the score 19-17. A solo block from McGhee made it 20-19, and Sczech kept BU within one at 21-20. The Utes got two points and BU called timeout, Utah getting set point. Baylor held them off for one more point with Sczech and Barrett Frazier getting the block, but the comeback was stopped, Utah getting the set at 25-21.

The Bears return home to the Ferrell Center for a match against Cincinnati on Oct. 17 with a first serve time of 7 p.m. CT.
