Bears come up short in 4 sets against the Horned Frogs
WACO, Texas – The 20th-ranked Baylor volleyball team fell short to TCU on Friday night at the Ferrell Center, 3-1.
BU (14-10, 8-6) couldn't overcome TCU (14-12, 7-8) in four sets at the Ferrell. TCU dominated the first set with a score of 25-16. The second set was a close 26-24 score, but the Horned Frogs would nearly edge the Bears. Baylor was able to take the third set 25-21 and came close in forcing a fifth set but ultimately fell in the fourth 29-27.
The Bears were led by Elise McGhee with 21 kills, followed by Allie Sczech and Riley Simpson with 10 each. Averi Carlson added 44 assists to her season total with a double-double as she had 13 digs, while Lauren Briseño secured 17 digs to lead the squad. Briseño also led the team in aces with two. On the block, Sczech had two solo and three assisted.
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The match opened up with Alicia Andrew and McGhee teaming up for a block to get the first points of the night for the Bears. McGhee gathered the first kill of the match shorty after and Baylor took a 2-1 lead over the Horned Frogs. Manuela Bibinbe grabbed her first kill of the night shortly after and retained the lead at 3-2. After multiple attacking and receiving errors from both sides TCU was able to take the lead at 8-7. The lead wouldn't last long as Riley Simpson got a kill to tie the game at 8-8. This first set would continue to go back and forth as Andrew and Sczech both picked up kills to make the score 10-10 and 11-11, respectively. Bibinbe and McGhee added a pair of kills, but the Bears trailed 15-13 at the media timeout. Coming out of the break, Baylor was forced to call their first timeout after a TCU service point with the score 16-13 Horned Frogs. TCU's momentum would continue as they scored three-straight points, again causing BU to call another timeout, this time at 19-14 Horned Frogs. Kendal Murphy was able to get a kill to make it 22-15 but ultimately the Bears would lose set one, 25-16.
Set 2
The second set opened up with the longest volley of the night and with McGhee being able to take home the first point of the set for the Bears. Briseño followed right after with an ace to help Baylor take an early 2-0 lead. After attacking errors from Baylor, the Horned Frogs recaptured the lead at 4-3. Points would continue to trade back and forth with McGhee, Sczech and Simpson all getting kills but the set continued to be in a gridlock, now 7-7. Simpson continued to stay hot and added two more kills and Sczech had a solo block to take the lead at 9-8 Bears. McGhee kept the hot hand and added two more kills to bring the score to 12-10, Bears still leading. After multiple attacking errors from both sides, Baylor was able to keep the lead at 15-12 going into the media timeout. Coming out of the pause, Bibinbe recorded an ace to grow the lead to 16-12. Baylor would have multiple attacking errors and TCU fought back to be down just two at 16-14, but Baylor would extend the lead to 18-15 thanks to errors from the Horned Frogs, forcing them to call their first timeout of the set. After three-straight errors from Baylor, the Horned Frogs tied the game at 18-18 causing Baylor to use a timeout. Sczech capitalized on an errant ball from TCU to regain the lead at 19-18, an attacking error from TCU allowed Baylor to take a 20-18 lead before TCU called their second and final timeout of the set. After a kill from TCU, McGhee came away with a powerful kill to make it 21-19, Bears still leading. After a combination of attacking errors and TCU kills the lead would be lost and the game became tied at 22-22. McGhee added another kill to her total to bring the game to a 23-23 tie. After trading kills TCU would ultimately pull away and win the set 26-24.
Set 3
The Bears started the third set with an Alexis Dacosta ace. McGhee added another kill after a service error to bring the score to 2-1 Bears leading early. After a TCU point and multiple errors from the Bears Dacosta was able to get an unorthodox kill to bring the score to 4-3 Horned Frogs on top. TCU would manage to get three straight points causing Baylor to call a timeout with TCU leading 7-3. McGhee continued to stay hot for the Bears and grabbed a kill after the timeout to make it 7-4 TCU. After attacking errors from TCU Bibinbe and Sczech teamed up for back-to-back blocks and Sczech added a kill the following point to allow Baylor to take the lead back at 9-8 forcing TCU to use a timeout. The Bears continued to stay red hot getting five straight points after the timeout and led 14-8. The scoring came from a Briseño ace and Simpson added two kills along with a solo block. The run caused TCU to call their second and final timeout of the set. Coming out of the timeout Bibinbe won a joust at the net and extended the lead to 15-8. After errors from both sides Simpson added another pair of kills to keep the lead at 17-9 and 18-12, respectively. TCU would fight back and win four straight points to cause Baylor to use a timeout with the score of 18-16, still leading. Coming out of the timeout Bibinbe would add a kill and McGhee would soon follow with a kill of her own to make the lead 19-16 and 21-17, respectively. Baylor would keep the lead thanks to a Sczech kill to make it 22-18 Bears. A solo block from Simpson would lead to Baylor being on top 23-19. An attacking error from TCU would allow the Bears to make it set point at 24-20 and a Simpson kill would allow Baylor to win the set 25-21.
Set 4
The fourth set opened with a McGhee kill assisted by Averi Carlson. McGhee stayed hot early in the set getting an additional two kills to make the score 2-3 and 3-4, respectively. TCU would go on to win the next three points before a service error made the score 7-4 TCU. Multiple errors from both sides would bring the score to 10-6, TCU still on top. Bibinbe managed to add a kill to make it 10-7 TCU, but errors would allow the Horned Frogs to extend their lead to 12-7 before McGhee grabbed a kill to make it 12-8. McGhee would add another kill and Sczech would shortly follow after but the Bears trailed 15-11 heading into the Media Timeout. Coming out of the timeout Sczech had a massive kill and immediately followed with a solo block to bring the score to 15-13, TCU still on top. Bibinbe and Simpson both added kills of their own to being the score to 17-15 TCU. After trading points McGhee was able to get two more kills followed by Szcech adding two of her own to bring the score to 20-19, TCU on top. McGhee stayed hot and tallied an ace to bring the game to a tie at 20-20, forcing TCU to use a timeout. Coming out of the timeout it was Sczech and McGhee again adding kills to their total, this time taking the lead thanks to McGhee's kill, 22-21, forcing TCU to use their last timeout of the set. Out of the timeout Sczech added another kill and Bibinbe followed shortly after to make it 24-22 set point for the Bears. TCU would fight back after multiple set points to bring the game to a tie at 27-27. An ace from TCU would lead to set point for the Horned Frogs and would take the set with a score of 29-27.
