Bears clinch second place in the Big 12 with 12th victory of the season

Whether she's playing on the court or sitting on the bench, Baylor junior Bri Coleman brings an energy that's hard to ignore and harder to fake.
After sitting out the first three sets, Coleman gave the third-ranked Bears the lift they needed in the fourth with two kills and a pair of blocks as Baylor (12-3) defeated 10th-ranked Kansas State, 25-15, 24-26, 27-25, 25-19, Friday night at the Ferrell Center to clinch a second-place finish in the Big 12.
"I did feel like our energy was down," McGuyre said. "Just the electricity, I didn't feel it in the air from the girls as much. I always know what we're going to get out of Bri every single day. I was hoping that she would help maintain the energy, talk through the net in a good way, and then obviously the fire power was something K-State needed to respect more."
K-State (10-5), which had won five in a row coming in, could have matched its best-ever finish in the Big 12 by sweeping the two-game series with Baylor. The Wildcats, who are now locked in at third, were the runners-up behind Nebraska in 2003.
"It is important, because I feel the Big 12 will be guaranteed one at-large (NCAA Tournament bid) for postseason," McGuyre said. "By no means do we want to stub our toe. We want to be the highest seed possible, and that means finishing strong with a win."
While the Baylor offense was inconsistent, hitting just .130 with seven errors in the second set, the defense carried the day with a season-high 17.5 blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Kara McGhee recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 12 blocks, while Shanel Bramschreiber tied her career-high with 22 digs.
"They were really good, especially (freshman Aliyah Carter) at going sharp crosses at Shanel," McGhee said. "We made bigger dive moves to that side, and we were able to get better touches."
Baylor was clearly at its best in a dominant first set, hitting .400 with only five errors, a perfect 1.000 serving percentage and four blocks while holding the Wildcats to a .067 hitting percentage.
"We were definitely dialed-in in the first set," McGuyre said. "I'm not sure that we were ever horrendous in any phase, but the offense was wrong and the defense was lagging in the second set, really the rest of the match. We started blocking a little better, but I think we were misconnecting on swings and not being as terminal as I think we should be and could be."
Kansas State fought back to even the match at a set apiece, rallying late to close out the second set, 26-24. The Bears had a 22-21 lead, but the Wildcats won five of the next seven points and tied up the match with a pair of kills down the stretch by Carter and an attacking error by Yossiana Pressley.
Baylor turned the tables in the third, fighting off a set point with a dump kill by setter Hannah Sedwick, followed by a Pressley kill and a Carter error. Pressley had a team-high 17 kills, but hit just .105, while Carter had a match-high 18 kills to go with five digs and three blocks.
Coleman gave the Bears the lift they needed in the fourth set with two blocks and a kill in a closing 9-3 run. Marieke van der Mark, who had 11 kills and six blocks, ended it with a cross-court kill.
"You have to know what's going on if that moment does come where you have to go in and the team needs you," Coleman said. "It's really being engaged the whole time and talking to the middles about what I see. And when Kara's on and I'm not, helping her find holes and helping her adjust to the defensive game plan that we have."
In their final match of the fall season, the Bears will face Kansas State at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 3 Baylor volleyball (12-3) handled No. 10 Kansas State (10-5) in four sets Friday night at the Ferrell Center, 25-15, 24-26, 27-25, 25-19 to clinch sole possession of second place in the Big 12 standings.
Shanel Bramschreiber was everywhere defensively for the Bears, tying her career-high with 22 digs, while Yossiana Pressley (17), Marieke van der Mark (11) and Kara McGhee (10) each reached double-digit kills to seal the victory. McGhee collected her first career double-double with a career-high 12 blocks.
The Bears got out to a strong start, hitting .400 in the first set. McGhee was efficient with four kills on five swings, including a putaway at 16-11 as part of a 5-0 BU run. Baylor also recorded four blocks in the set, holding K-State to just a .067 attack percentage. Hannah Sedwick teamed up with McGhee for a double block at 21-12 as the Bears cruised to a first set win.
In the second, the Wildcats evened the match as BU struggled to the tune of a .130 hitting efficiency. Attack errors told the story, as the two sides combined for 14 total in the frame. The Bears couldn't overcome a narrow deficit as the set needed extra points to decide a winner, but a late KSU kill and a BU attack error ultimately gave it to the Wildcats.
It was neck-and-neck once more in the third, as K-State hung around and traded points with Baylor throughout the majority of the set. Six different Bears recorded kills, including Callie Williams and Sedwick who each put down three. Sedwick found the floor at 25-25 to stave off a Wildcat set point, and a Pressley ace swung the momentum in the Bears' favor, leading them to a 27-25 set win.
BU flexed its muscles in the fourth, spreading the ball around again with six more players tallying kills. Bri Coleman came off the bench to spark the Bears with a pair of kills and two blocks. She combined with Lauren Harrison for a rejection at 18-16 that ignited a four-point run and the Bears saw out the set behind kills from Pressley and van der Mark.

"It is important, because I feel the Big 12 will be guaranteed one at-large bid for the postseason. We want to be the highest seed possible and that means finishing strong with a win tomorrow. K-State is more than deserving to be considered in that top-48. We always say the better team always wins on the second night. You want to at least get the split to finish second, but I want to make sure we are the best team on the second day."

On bringing energy off the bench…
"I just think it's all about relationships. Just getting on the court, knowing that the girls to your right trust and respect you, and knowing that I am fully there supporting them no matter what, so just pouring into them as best I can. Whether that's making plays, encouraging them, or speaking life into them, I think that's my mindset going in. Even on the bench too, when I can lift people up."
