Baylor secure first win over UCLA since the 2009 NCAA Tournament
THE RUNDOWN
LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 20 Baylor volleyball (1-0) brought out the brooms in the 2019 season opener with a 3-0 sweep over UCLA Friday afternoon at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.
BU posted a .278 offensive efficiency in the match while holding UCLA to a .074 percentage. Junior Yossiana Pressley led all hitters with 19 kills on a .389 hitting clip.
The Bears and Bruins were tied up at 15-15 after a Hannah Lockin ace, and then BU doubled up UCLA to take a 21-18 lead on a Pressley and Kara McGhee block. Baylor did not let up on its way to a 25-20 first-set victory.
The Bears jumped out quick in set two and used a 4-0 run with Shelly Stafford behind the line for the 5-1 lead. The Bruins quickly jumped back and made it a one-point match before the Bears pushed past and used two aces by Shanel Bramschreiber to take the second, 25-16.
BU used three straight kills by Hannah Lockin and Kara McGhee to take a quick 6-2 lead to open the set. UCLA jumped in front, 12-11, after a Baylor attacking error, but the Bears took the lead back at 13-12 with a Pressley kill.
A Baylor block from Marieke van der Mark and Kara McGhee made it a 19-16 lead, and BU closed out the match with a Stafford kill to sweep the Bruins, 25-20.
