Even going against a stiff 20-mph wind, Baylor soccer dominated 17th-ranked Texas Tech in pretty much every statistical category, including shots (20-9), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (8-2).
But, the Red Raiders finished with an edge in the one number that matters. Kirsten Davis scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Tech (12-2-2, 4-1-2) to a 2-0 win Friday at Betty Lou Mays Field in a game that was postponed Thursday night because of lightning.
"We know possession doesn't win the game, we've got to put it in the back of the net. And that's what (Tech was) able to do," said coach Paul Jobson, whose team fell to 7-6-3 overall and 3-4-0 in the Big 12. "With their limited opportunities, they were able to score. And with this game, that's how it works. We've got to do better with our opportunities."
Playing with the strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Bears completely dominated with a 10-2 edge in shots and kept the ball on the Red Raiders' defensive half of the field. Raegan Padgett, who had as many shots on goal as Tech (4), hit the crossbar with a shot from about 35 yards.
Maddie Algya also had a couple shots on goal in the first half, but Tech freshman goalkeeper Madison White had six of her 11 saves.
"For a forward, it's frustrating," Padgett said, "but we put our best foot forward and out-shot them (20-9). We had opportunities, it just didn't happen for us today. That's the way soccer goes."
Baylor continued to get plenty of scoring chances in the second half, including a flurry of four shots in front of the goal by Camryn Wendlandt, Padgett, Ally Henderson and Elizabeth Kooiman in a span of 27 seconds.
"We decided not to let the weather really change our game," Padgett said. "We tried to grind through it, but it definitely affected the game. That's soccer, we play outside, so it's just something we had to deal with. The over ball wasn't really working, because it was held up by the wind, so we just tried to get it to our outside winger's feet and try go at them and push crosses."
The conference leader in shots (82), shots on goal (37) and goals (13), Davis got a pass from Macy Schultz, won a one-on-one with goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt and drilled a shot into the left side of the net for a 1-0 nine minutes into the second half.
About 12 minutes later, Wandt saved a shot from Charlotte Teeter, but Davis was on the spot for the deflection and blasted in her second goal of the game.
"She's a great leader. She understands spaces, she understands how to time her runs," Jobson said of Davis, who ranked in the top 15 nationally. "She throws off defenders by her delayed runs and slashes. She knows when to take off."
The Bears wrap up the weekend with their final home match, hosting Iowa State (3-13-0, 0-7-0) for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Sunday. Iowa State has lost eight in a row, falling 3-2 at Texas on Friday.
Padgett is one of seven seniors who will be honored after the game, joined by Maggie Burton, Danielle Hayden, Audrey Johnston, Kylie Ross, Halee Sowinski and Camryn Wendlandt.
"We try to pretend like it's just another game," Padgett said. "We just try to keep our nerves to the game and not so emotional in everything. I'm ready to come out and bounce back from this loss."
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer (7-6-3, 3-4-0) finished with a commanding advantage in shots but couldn't get any into the back of the net as the Bears dropped a 2-0 contest to No. 17 Texas Tech (11-2-2, 3-1-2). The match, originally scheduled for Thursday night, was played out in gusty conditions Friday morning at Betty Lou Mays Field.
The northwest wind that remained steady around 20 miles per hour throughout the match was at the back of the team attacking the goal by the baseball field. For the team attacking the other direction, the wind took crosses meant for the far post and backed them up to outside the top of the box.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie with Baylor outshooting the Red Raiders, 10-2. Six of those shots were on goal as Raegan Padgett had one go off the crossbar. Maddie Algya had a pair of shots that were saved by Texas Tech keeper Madison White.
The Bears took the field in the second half going against the wind, but the gusts didn't deter their aggressive mindset. Baylor put up 10 more shots in the second half with five of them on goal.
Texas Tech broke the scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Macy Schultz passed the ball to Kirsten Davis who took the ball in stride outside the top of the box, made a move to get Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt off her line and sent it into the net.
Davis would go on to score one more time, in the 66th minute, when she rebounded a saved shot attempt by Charlotte Teeter and kicked it into the goal.
HIGHLIGHTS
1 – Number of regular-season home games remaining at Betty Lou Mays Field. Baylor hosts Iowa State at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day. If fans purchased a ticket for Thursday night's Texas Tech contest that was rescheduled, that ticket will be honored on Sunday.

Paul Jobson on the match…
"I think we played well enough to win today but credit to Texas Tech. They found a way to make it happen in every statistical category. They led in saves which is an advantage to us, and we led in every other offensive category except for fouls today. I thought we played well enough to win, but they have one of the leading goal scorers in the country. You fall asleep on her twice, she scores twice. Their goalkeeper made two or three great saves in the first half, and those are the differences in the game."
