Team Green storms back to take five-set victory
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – 16th-ranked Baylor volleyball closed its preseason schedule with a thrilling five-set match during its annual Green & Gold Scrimmage Tuesday at the Ferrell Center. The green team outlasted the gold team, 23-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-8.
Led offensively by senior Aniah Philo, the green team also piled on 10 blocks and limited the Gold Team to 7.5 blocks.
From the service line, both teams combined for 12 aces with Team Gold's match-best seven.
The gold squad rolled out with an early 5-1 lead, but the green team would come back to tie the set on five occasions. The offensive power decided the final two points of the set with the green team coming out on top, 25-23.
With the match tied at 9-9, an Ashley Fritcher kill helped the gold squad stay on top for the rest of the set. The team hit a match-best .438 to win set two, 25-18.
The green team did not go away quietly and jumped out to a 14-9 lead after a Gia Milana kill. The gold team made a late surge but ultimately dropped set three, 25-23.
The green squad carried the momentum into set four, rolling off 12 kills to take the frame and force a fifth and final set.
Leading 8-4 at the changeover, the green team held the gold squad to a .045 while hitting a .389 clip to take the fifth set and the match.
HIGHLIGHTS
• The gold team hit .229 while the green team hit .188.
• The green team was comprised of assistant coach Samantha Erger, senior Aniah Philo, junior Jaelyn Jackson, sophomores Hannah Lockin and Taylor Marburger, and freshmen Bri Coleman, Marieke van der Mark and Sydney Sacra.
• The gold team was comprised of assistant coach Jason Williams, senior Ashley Fritcher, junior Tara Wulf, Shelly Fanning and Nicole Thomas, sophomore Yossiana Pressley, and freshmen Emily Van Slate and Shanel Bramschreiber.
• Aniah Philo led all players with 25 kills.
