Bears notch six goals from six different scorers
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer (2-0) scored three goals in each period, allowing just one opposing goal to sneak through in a dominating 6-1 win over Samford (0-2) on Sunday evening at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
Baylor completely controlled the match from start to finish, scoring two goals in the first four minutes, the first coming just 35 seconds into the contest, the quickest goal to begin a match in program history.
Raegan Padgett got the scoring frenzy started, pushing up the right sideline and past the Samford backline. Going one-on-one with the Samford keeper, Sarah Thorne, Padgett was able to sidestep her diving save attempt and push across the score in the opening minute of the match.
Keeping the pressure on just moments later in the fourth minute, Padgett again got the attack started, pushing up the right side. Choosing to cross on her approach, she was able to find freshman Taylor Moon, who headed in her second goal of the weekend to put BU in front, 2-0.
Samford caught the young Baylor backline on its heels, sneaking behind the defense and drawing Hannah Parrish out of the net, leaving an open goal opportunity for the Bulldogs that Caroline Orman capitalized on for the scoring effort in the seventh minute.
Carrying a 2-1 lead into the 18th minute, Taylor Moon drew a foul on her attack just outside of the penalty box, setting up for a free kick by Julie James.
James bent a hooking goal into the top left corner of the net, pushing the Baylor lead to 3-1.
Although the teams settled into the match in the second period, BU's depth and youth truly took over in the last 20 minutes.
In the 72', Maddie Algya took a corner for the Bears, lofting up a perfect pass to find Camryn Wendlandt for the header finish, giving BU the 4-1 advantage.
After another Samford foul drawn by Taylor Moon, this time inside the penalty box, Algya took the penalty kick and drove home her second goal of the season, extending Baylor's lead to 5-1.
In the closing moments of the match in the 89th minute, Algya passed up to fellow freshman Giuliana Cunningham, who snaked a shot through the Samford defense and behind the keeper to cap off a 6-1 victory for BU.

On how he thought the game went…
"The concern in games like this when you have a delay is if your team's going to be able to maintain their focus. Fortunately for the veterans, they've had this before. They've been through this before. It's the young ones you kind of are concerned about. But they kept their focus and their mentality. I challenged them to make a statement early, I didn't know it would be 35 seconds early, but I think they did what they needed to do, got a two-goal lead, made a couple mistakes to give up the goal that we gave up, but those are learning moments. I told them, we're 19 days in, this will be a learning opportunity for us and we got that today. We did what we needed to do, beat a good team and did some really good things."
Baylor Midfielder Julie James
On momentum going into road trip…
"It's always good to get some wins under your belt, especially at Betty Lou. It's a great momentum builder for the season, but the road is also a great experience where we can get out and just focus on each other and the games without the distractions that come with being home. It's a great way to get some wins to build off of before going on the road."
NOTES
