Both Bears are unanimous selections on the first team
IRVING, Texas – Baylor volleyball standouts Yossiana Pressley and Shelly Fanning were named unanimous All-Big 12 First Team honorees, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
"These two athletes carried us both together and sometimes individually this season," head coach Ryan McGuyre said. "We had two incredible offensive weapons that opponents struggled to stop. They will both continue to have All-American careers."
For the second-straight season, Pressley led the conference in kills per set (4.83) and points per set (5.28) and posted 24 double-digit kill matches in 2018. She is now a two-time unanimous selection to the first team after being named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year a season ago.
"Yossi has been a threat all season long and took over several matches for us," McGuyre said. "She is a threat in the front row and back and was the top scorer in the Big 12 for the second-straight year. That is no small feat. Her resiliency is deeply consistent and makes her a beautiful teammate."
Named to the first team for the second consecutive year, Fanning earns her third All-Big 12 honor after being named to the All-Freshman Team in 2015. The Cypress, Texas native is a unanimous selection after leading the conference in hitting percentage (.401) this season, recording a .500 efficiency in five matches in 2018.
She joins Pressley as only the seventh and eighth players to earn multiple first team honors in her career.
"Shelly Fanning led this team all season long and really carried us when we had other injuries," McGuyre said. "She was impressively unstoppable even when other teams knew we were setting her. It is a testament to her brilliant mind and relentless preparation. She learns, adapts quickly and applies her skills and wisdom on the court swiftly."
Appearing in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, Baylor (19-8) faces Hawai'i (18-8) in the first round Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.
