Bears Need to Handle the Hype, Keep Cool Against TCU
BAYLOR vs. TCU:
FIVE KEYS TO SATURDAY'S GAME
FIVE KEYS TO SATURDAY'S GAME
- PACK THE PLACE: With everything on the line, playing against your biggest rival with a chance to become bowl-eligible, McLane Stadium needs to be packed and loud. This team, that's come so far in the last year, deserves to come out and witness the seats filled with a sea of crazy Baylor fans decked out in black.
- HANDLE THE HYPE: in road games at Texas and Iowa State, the players and coaches were actually too hyped. Yes, this is a big game, there's a lot of emotions surrounding the rivalry and you want to get off to a good start. But, keep it cool. You can bring the heat, you can feed off the energy of the crowd, without being out of control.
- KEEP YOUR COOL: Last week's scuffle with Iowa State aside, things always get a little chippy with TCU, on both sides. Just a year ago, there was an on-field fight near the end of the game in Fort Worth that resulted in a half-game penalty for running back JaMycal Hasty in this year's conference opener against Kansas. Don't respond, retaliate or initiate, just let your play on the field do your talking.
- BRING THE HEAT: TCU's offensive line has only given up 12 sacks all year, but Baylor needs to bring some pressure and make things hot for TCU sophomore quarterback, making just his fourth start. There certainly has been no sophomore jinx for James Lynch. A Freshman All-American when he had three sacks and five tackles for loss, the 6-4, 285-pounder has upped those totals to 5.5 sacks and 8 ½ stops behind the line this season. Look for Lynch, Ira Lewis, Bravvion Roy and Co. to create havoc in the Horned Frogs' backfield.
- SEND OUT THE SENIORS: Twenty seniors will be honored before the game, including a starting group of Chris Platt, Jalen Hurd, Blake Blackmar, Patrick Lawrence, Ira Lewis, Derrek Thomas, Verkedric Vaughns and Drew Galitz. "That's always been a really big deal to me, that they walk off the field as winners," head coach Matt Rhule said. "I want to make sure these guys who have really stood for Baylor, and they've also stood for me personally, I want them to walk off the field as winners." That would also make the Bears bowl-eligible and give Rhule and the staff an extra game for those seniors.
