Fanning Earns Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Junior middle blocker honored for third-straight week
IRVING, Texas – Redshirt junior Shelly Fanning was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for her third-straight honor, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Fanning earns her seventh career weekly honor from the conference and a team-leading fifth award this season. The middle blocker earns her first defensive nod of 2018 after being the back-to-back Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week last Monday.
Fanning turned up the heat defensively and led the league in blocks per set (2.43) and total blocks (17) in week 12.
The junior had a career-high nine blocks against Iowa State on Wednesday. In fact, Fanning was a part of every single BU block in the team's 9.5 blocks.
Then, on Saturday she nearly matched her new career high with eight blocks against Kansas State in Manhattan. Her eight blocks are the best in a three-set match since Oct. 13 and led the Big 12 last week.
Fanning's honor brings the 2018 weekly award total to eight. The 2017 squad compiled a single-season program record with 15 honors.
Baylor faces Texas Tech tonight at 6 p.m. CT inside United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock. The match will air on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and the FOX Sports GO App.
