Preview: VB Hosts West Virginia Saturday Afternoon

WACO, Texas -- Baylor volleyball (14-4, 4-1 Big 12) looks to continue its winning ways against West Virginia (12-5, 1-3) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT at the Ferrell Center in Waco.

The Bears are 4-0 against WVU under head coach Ryan McGuyre heading into Saturday's match. BU swept the series for the second consecutive year last season, winning 3-1 in Morgantown and sweeping the Mountaineers in Waco. BU has only dropped one set to WVU in the last four meetings.

Baylor started off the week with a 3-0 upset win at No. 20 Iowa State, marking the first time the Bears won back-to-back matches in Ames since 2004-05.

Baylor volleyball welcomes Scout Day to the Ferrell Center on Saturday, where all Boy Scouts will receive a patch if they attend in uniform (while supplies last).

BAYLOR RECENTLY
- On Wednesday, the Bears stormed into Ames, Iowa and upset No. 20 Iowa State for the team's first sweep over ISU in Ames since Oct. 5, 2001. The Bears also recorded their first ranked win on the road since Nov. 12, 2011 at No. 25 Oklahoma and now have back-to-back wins in Ames for the first time since 2004-05.
- While Katie Staiger struggled with a -.042 hitting percentage, Shelly Fanning had a match-high 14 kills on a .500 hitting effort. Yossiana Pressley contributed 10 kills while Hannah Lockin posted a double-double in front of her home state (37 assists, 11 digs).
- Last Saturday, BU secured a four-set win over Oklahoma in Waco to improve to 3-1 in conference action. Katie Staiger matched a season-high 26 kills and helped BU hold off a late OU run in the fourth set to clinch the match.
- The Bears also had a double-double performance from Aniah Philo who contributed 13 kills and 12 digs.

TEAM NOTABLES
- BU improved to 11-0 when holding opponents to below a .200 hitting percentage. ISU hit .113.
- BU has six players with double-digit aces (Fanning, Staiger, Lockin, Pressley, Brusek and Philo).
- Baylor is 9-0 when leading in blocks this season and 5-4 when trailing.
- Shelly Fanning, the Big 12's attack leader, has hit .400 or better in five in the last eight matches.
- Katie Staiger has hit .400 or better in five of the last eight matches, most recently hitting .444 vs. OU.
- BU holds an eight-match home winning streak, dating back to the 3-0 win over Illinois State on Aug. 26.
- Baylor has only trailed in team kills twice this season (at Hawai'i, at Texas), and has only been outdug once (vs. then-No. 15 Florida State).

BU VS. WVU HISTORICALLY
- The Bears look their fifth-straight win over the Mountaineers on Saturday. The last loss came on Nov. 22, 2014 in a 3-0 sweep in Morgantown.
- Baylor's last loss at home to West Virginia came on Oct. 22, 2014 in a four-set defeat.
- Last season, the Bears swept the series for the second consecutive season, first in a four-set victory on the road and then a 3-0 sweep in Waco. Three players hit .375 or better in Waco: Staiger with 18 kills, Freiberg with nine, Ashley Fritcher with five and Nicole Thomas with four.
- Under third-year head coach Ryan McGuyre, the Bears are 4-0 against the Mountaineers and have only dropped one set in the last four meetings.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
- West Virginia (12-5, 1-3 Big 12) is currently on a three-match losing streak after opening up conference action with a 3-1 victory over TCU in Morgantown.
- The Mountaineers had a solid non-conference slate, finishing 11-2 and recording wins over Tennessee and UTSA. WVU had a 10-match winning streak before it was snapped with a 3-2 loss to then-No. 6 Texas at home.
- West Virginia is led by Preseason All-Big 12 selection Payton Caffrey with 3.15 kills per set. Erin Slinde leads at the setting position with 10.67 assists per set.

BEARS TABBED NO. 32 IN FIRST RPI RANKINGS
- The Bears are ranked No. 32 in the first RPI rankings of the 2017 season. The No. 32 ranking is two short of BU's program high, No. 30, and best ranking since the 2015 season (No. 30).
- BU is 6-3 against RPI top-56 opponents, besting No. 18 BYU, No. 19 Iowa State, No. 42 Washington State, No. 49 Texas Tech, No. 53 LSU and No. 56 TCU.
- All four of BU's losses have come to RPI top-80 teams: No. 3 Texas, No. 33 Florida State, No. 47 Hawai'i and No. 79 College of Charleston.

CAREER MILESTONE WATCH
- Jana Brusek is 36 digs away from 1,500 career digs. She would become the sixth BU player to reach 1,500 career digs and first since Kristen Schramek (2004-07).
- Shelly Fanning is three kills away from 500 career kills at Baylor.
- Sitting at 99 matches, Tola Itiola will play in her 100th career match.
