For a Baylor soccer team that's played eight of its last 11 games on the road, Betty Lou Mays Field has to look like a beautiful oasis in the desert.
Back home for the first time since Sept. 23, the Bears (10-4-1, 3-1-1) will host TCU (8-2-2, 0-2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday as part of three straight at Betty Lou Mays Field to close out the regular season.
"We've been gone so long, this is almost like a season opener for us back at Betty Lou," coach Paul Jobson said. "It's Homecoming weekend, so I hope there's a lot of excitement and a lot of fans that can get behind our girls and the success they've had on the road. And I hope that can translate into some success here at home."
Using a "road warrior" mentality, the Bears upset 22nd-ranked Oklahoma, 2-1, last Friday and then finished off the extended four-game road swing with a 1-0 victory at Texas Tech on Sunday.
"We've said from the beginning of the season that we were going to have to be road warriors this year, because obviously we're on the road quite a bit," Jobson said. "Our girls really stepped up being road warriors this weekend and throughout this season. Sunday, in the second half we're playing against a wind, and Tech did a great job of putting a lot of pressure on us. And I think we defended really, really well. Last season, we faced some things like that and gave up some really late goals. I think it just shows the maturity of our team."
With a 3-1-1 conference record and 10 points, Baylor is tied for second in the league with Kansas and all but guaranteed a spot in next month's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. But, it doesn't change the Bears' approach.
"It really goes along with what we've been talking about all season about just taking one game at a time," Jobson said. "Because we've done that, we've put ourselves in a really good position. But, if we look away from that and start thinking about, then we won't do ourselves any justice. We've got to finish strong and finish the way we started, which is one game at a time and focus on the things we need to do today to get better for the weekend."
For this weekend, all of the focus is on a TCU team that started out 7-0-1 and on the brink of breaking into the top 25. But the Horned Frogs have gotten off to a bumpy start in league play with losses to Oklahoma and Kansas and a 0-0 tie with Iowa State.
"This is definitely the best TCU team we've seen since they've been in the Big 12," Jobson said. "Credit to (TCU coach Eric Bell) and his staff and how they've developed that program and grown that program. There's some things we've got to adjust and some things we're going to have to do, but I'm really confident in our team's capabilities, and I'm also really happy that we're at home."
Baylor leads the all-time series, 9-0-3, with three straight ties. Last year, the Bears ended the regular season with a 1-1 tie in Fort Worth, then won an eight-round shootout, 7-6, in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals with Lauren Piercy getting the deciding goal.
The first 250 fans through the gates receive Baylor scarves and the first 500 will get vuvuzelas (stadium horns).
