THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas -- Baylor soccer posted its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois Friday evening at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. The Bears (2-4-1) used a pair of headers from
Julie James and stellar defense to take down the Huskies (1-5-0).
The Bears seemed to get back to form at home by scoring early and applying suffocating defense to the opponent. Off a free kick by Katie Daigle in the 13th minute from the right wing, Julie James sailed above traffic for a header to give BU a 1-0 edge.
In the second half and 68th minute, the Bears struck again on a set piece off a corner kick by Bri Campos. Served into the box, Sarah King headed the ball to James for another header and the dagger.
Sara Martinson earned her first win of the season, posting three saves in 90 shutout minutes.

It was not for a lack of effort in the earlier games. Things were not falling our way and they are now. Hopefully we can build some momentum." -- Head Coach Paul Jobson

Baylor Bear Insider Recap By Hector Castelltort
There's no place like home.
Coming off the team's first win of the season, the Baylor soccer team (2-4-1) returned to Betty Lou Mays Field Friday night and shut out the Northern Illinois Huskies, 2-0, on the opening day of the Baylor Tournament.
"It's always good to be home, always good to be playing at Betty Lou Mays Field," head coach Paul Jobson said. "There is nothing better than the comforts of home, nothing better than your own locker room."
After exploding for seven goals in last Sunday's road win over Incarnate Word, the Bears got going early when freshman Julie James' header off a free kick by Katie Daigle found the back of the net in the 13th minute. It was James' second goal in as many games, but not her last of the night.
Although Baylor finished the first half with an 8-4 edge in shots, the Huskies' defense tightened up after James' tally as it remained 1-0 at the break.
NIU (1-5-0) had three shots on goal in the first half as BU goalkeeper Sara Martinson recorded all three of her saves in the first 45 minutes.
When the Bears came back out after halftime, they looked like a whole different team.
"We talked about it at halftime that we needed to come out a little bit better," Jobson said. "We needed to dominate a little bit more, through the midfield, especially, and I thought we did. We stepped up to the challenge better in the second half, much better than we did in the first."
Baylor allowed just two shots in the second half and none on goal as Martinson went the distance to pick up her first win of the season.
"It's great for the whole team," Martinson said. "We have been working so hard. But at the same time, we have the next game now."
In the 68th minute, the Baylor offense struck again. Bri Campos' corner kick from the left wing was headed by Sarah King and then James in a scrum in the middle of the box, extending the lead to 2-0.
James took over the team lead with three goals and seven points for the season, but said her goals Friday were more of a team effort.
"It feels pretty good," she said. "But I also got to give credit to the other players. They made that happen. Katie Daigle couldn't have played a better ball. Sarah King headed that ball back to me. It's always exciting, but there is a lot of other players on that, too."
It was a special win for Jobson, who took over head coaching duties this year. "The girls have been working their rear ends off all season. And now, to have two wins under their belt, they start feeling what it's like (to win) and to score goals."
Jobson said the Bears' four losses in their first five games to open the season were "not for a lack of effort."
"Things were not falling our way," he said, "and hopefully now we can build some momentum"
Baylor will cap off the weekend and the tournament when the Bears face UTSA (0-5-1) at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Roadrunners tied UL-Lafayette, 2-2, Friday afternoon.
