Baylor Bear Insider Preview
By Jerry Hill
Hoping to build off the momentum from last Sunday's 7-1 road win over Incarnate Word, the Baylor soccer team (1-4-1) will host the four-team Baylor Invitational this weekend at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
The Bears will face Northern Illinois (1-4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday and UTSA (0-5-0) at 4 p.m. Sunday, with Louisiana-Lafayette (4-2-0) filling out the tournament lineup and playing UTSA at 4 p.m. Friday and UNI at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Baylor's husband-wife combo of Paul and Marci Jobson started their coaching career at Northern Illinois, posting a three-year record of 23-27-9 in 2005-07 and taking the Huskies to the MAC championship final in '06.
"Marci and I have great ties to NIU. It's where we got our start," Paul Jobson said. "We've known their head coach, John Ross, for a long, long time, even before our coaching days. Northern is a special place for us. It's kind of cool to have them in, but it will probably be even more special when we go back up there and play at DeKalb next year."
Since opening the season with a 2-1 win over Lewis, Northern Illinois has lost four in a row. But the Huskies knocked off Iowa State, 2-0, in a preseason exhibition game and have dropped three one-goal decisions.
"Just like our record isn't indicative of our ability, I would say the same for them," Jobson said. "They've played some teams really, really tight and been unlucky in some circumstances, but they've got some really nice pieces. It's a lot like the type of kids we used to get up there and we still try to get here too â '¬" just blue-collar, hard-working, tough-nosed kids."
UTSA has had a tough opening schedule, playing just one game at home and facing a pair of top-20 teams in North Carolina and Texas Tech. They had a tough road trip last weekend, getting shut out by Tech, 4-0, and falling 8-1 at Oklahoma.
After scoring just four goals combined in their first five games, including a 1-1 tie at Sam Houston last Friday, the Bears exploded for seven in Sunday's win at Incarnate Word. Of the 20 non-goalie players that made the trip, half of them contributed a goal or assist, with Precious Akanyirige leading the way with two goals in the first 25 minutes.
"We've been seeing a lot of great opportunities, and we kept saying that eventually they would start going in," Jobson said. "And we saw that on Sunday, for sure. That's something that can start some momentum once the girls start seeing some success. . . . I do think the win on Sunday came at a really good time for us, so hopefully we can continue to move forward."
