INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The third-ranked Baylor men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 1 Oklahoma in the finale of the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden Sunday.
The Bears suffered its second loss to Oklahoma on the season, after falling 4-2 to the Sooners at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February.
Baylor (14-3) lost its first doubles point of the year and won only one match in singles against Oklahoma (15-1).
BU opened doubles with the 77th-ranked duo of Julian Lenz and Diego Galeano upsetting No. 69 Alex Ghilea and Andrew Harris, 6-2, on court two.
However, the Sooners answered back as the 40th-ranked tandem of Mate Zsiga and Tony Lupieri lost a 6-4 contest against No. 5 Dane Webb and Axel Alvarez at the top of the lineup.
After winning 11-straight matches, Felipe Rios and Vince Schneider were beaten 6-4 by Spencer Papa and Florin Bragusi on court three to give OU the first point of the match.
Things escalated quickly in singles play with Oklahoma jumping out to a 3-0 lead. First, the 29th-ranked Lupieri lost 6-1, 6-2 to No. 7 Alvarez at the No. 2 spot. Then Schneider was unable to upset the 53rd-ranked Ghilea, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.
The fourth-ranked Lenz took care of the 19th-ranked Harris, 6-3, 6-2, to capture BU's lone point of the day. Lenz has a 9-2 singles record in dual-match play and has wins over four top 20 ranked opponents.
To end the match, Rios had his 10-match singles win streak stopped with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Florin Bragusi at the No. 6 spot.
