Dec. 7, 2015 TYLER, Texas - Baylor junior wide receiver Corey Coleman was selected as one of five finalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the award's selection committee announced Monday.
Baylor has now had a finalist for the honor in each of the award's three seasons as QB Bryce Petty was honored in 2013 and 2014.
This season, Coleman, a junior wide receiver, leads the country in touchdown receptions (20) and is third in receiving yards per game (113.6). The junior's 20 TD grabs are currently ranked tied for third-most for a single season in Big 12 history and ninth-most in NCAA history.
The Richardson, Texas, native has re-written the BU record books, breaking Kendall Wright's school single season (14) and career (30) receiving TD records. Coleman now sits with 20 on the year and 33 for his career.
Earlier this year, Coleman recorded the eighth 1,000-yard receiving season in program history and became the first player in program history with multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons (had 1,119 in 2014). Coleman set a new Big 12 record by catching multiple TDs in seven consecutive games and has at least one TD catch in eight of 12 games this season.
On the year, Coleman has 74 catches for 1,363 yards and he was already named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award. Coleman is the featured receiver for the nation's top offense as the Bears are averaging 604.6 yards per game and scoring 48.0 points per contest, both tops in the FBS.
The other four finalists for the award include: Trevone Boykin (QB, TCU), Josh Doctson (WR, TCU), Baker Mayfield (QB, Oklahoma) and Greg Ward Jr. (QB, Houston). The winner will be announced at the award banquet in Tyler, Texas on Jan. 13, 2016.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.
BU finished the regular season at 9-3 and 6-3 in Big 12 play. BU will now play in the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl against No. 10 North Carolina in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 29. The Bears will be appearing in a bowl game for a sixth-straight season for the first time in program history. For more information, visit www.baylorbears.com/bowlcentral.
