Nov. 25, 2015 WACO, Texas ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Baylor football first-year offensive coordinator Kendal Briles was named as one of the 34 assistant coaches in the country that are nominees for the 2015 Broyles Award, The Rotary Club of Little Rock announced Wednesday.
One of two coaches in the Big 12 (Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley) up for the accolade that honors the top assistant college football coach in America, Briles' Baylor offense leads the NCAA with 644.1 yards and 53.8 points per game.
Briles' recognition marks the second time in three years that Baylor's offensive coordinator has been a nominee for the Broyles Award (Philip Montgomery, 2013). In his eighth season on the Bears' staff, the son of head coach Art Briles spent the 2008-11 seasons as inside receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator. After continuing his role as offensive recruiting coordinator and moving to passing game coordinator and receivers coach from 2012-14, Briles took over as offensive coordinator for the 2015 Cotton Bowl.
In 11 games as offensive coordinator, Briles has led Baylor to over 400 yards of total offense in each game and has scored 20 or more points in the first half and 40 or more total points in 10 of those contests. In nine of the games BU has gone over 500 yards total offense and has topped 600 yards seven times.
This season, Briles' offense has helped Baylor to a 9-1 (6-1 Big 12) record and seventh overall national ranking. Under his guidance, the Bears have achieved several notable feats. Baylor is the only FBS school to be top 10 in passing (9th, 350.7) and rushing offense (4th, 293.4) and is the only team to average over 7.5 yards per play, gaining 7.93 a snap. BU has outscored foes 538-279 through 10 games and leads the FBS in victory margin (25.9), while its 538 points through 10 games are second-most by any school since 1937. Additionally, the Bears lead all FBS teamsà ¢Ã¢' ¬Ã‹ € in touchdown drives of two minutes or less (45) and are the nation's only team to score a touchdown on its first drive in every game this season.
Several players have also achieved notable feats. The Bears have played Seth Russell, Jarrett Stidham and Chris Johnson at quarterback and the trio has combined for a 193.57 passing efficiency, which leads the country. Receiver Corey Coleman leads the country in TDà ¢Ã¢' ¬Ã‹ € catches (20) and is second in receiving yards per game (130.6). Coleman earlier this season broke the school single season (14, has 20) and career (30, has 33) receiving touchdown records. Running back Shock Linwood (7.09) is fifth nationally in rushing yards per carry and 13th in rushing yards per game (124.0), both are top marks in the Big 12 as well.
The award's five finalists will be announced on Monday, Nov. 30. The 2015 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 8th at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Broyles Award is presented by The Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental.
