Nov. 23, 2015 On Big 12 weekly awards by Andrew Billings (Co-Defensive POW) KD Cannon (Offensive POW):
"Great honor for them. I know we've had a few through the year and really haven't had a chance to mention them. All those guys who have had that honor certainly we appreciate it from Baylor University and the football team."
On Saturday's win at Oklahoma State:
"Much needed road win the other night. I'm really proud of the effort our guys gave, their attitude they played with, and I thought the coaches did a tremendous job of having our team prepared, especially coming off of very much a disappointment the week before. The great thing is we have another opportunity this week. That's what this profession is all about. It's a week-to-week business and you just grind through it and hope for good things. That's certainly what will happen this week."
On Chris Johnson:
"He has a lot of spirit and a lot of energy ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" every intangible you could ever hope for ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" he's just a tremendous young man with a tremendous heart. He's just a great teammate, like I said the other night. Since he's moved back to quarterback he's really gotten sharp. We knew we were in a situation if something would've happened to us ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" he'd have to be ready to go ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" and he was ready. The playbook was open, and we were dialing up the same things we were with Seth [Russell] and Jarrett [Stidham], because he's good and he can deliver. He can do it. That part of it was not surprising at all. He brings another element to the table, too. He's a big guy who can run. It's good that you can be a little different late in the season from a schematic standpoint also."
On quarterback depth:
"I think it's a tribute to [our quarterbacks], quite honestly. The thing about the quarterback position is you recruit one, one a year normally, some years we've gone without recruiting one. You never want to get too heavy at that position, so the guys that are in there must be always dialed in. All through the year they're dialed in, you're talking football, they understand everything that's going on. It's just in their DNA at that position to understand, to use their intelligence as an advantage, and to be very competitive. These guys are always at the top of their game, whether it's January, or whether it's November the 28th. They're going to be ready to go."
On Jarrett Stidham's injury:
"I think it's the fibula. He was not very good yesterday. I haven't seen or talked to him or [trainer] Mike [Sims]. I would list him as highly questionable for this week."
On preparing Chris as starter and pulling others up to take reps in practice:
"I think definitely today we'll prepare Chris as our starter. We have a couple guys we're looking at. Really don't want to mention them because we haven't talked to them. This has been a pretty quick turnaround since Saturday night to right now. We haven't really had the chance to evaluate everything we're going through."
On if the team is better able to withstand injuries now than they were two or three years ago:
"I think so. We've been feeling that way the last three years, that we finally have the Big 12 quality depth that you have to have to finish the season. Especially when every game you're involved in is a big game, either from your side or the opponent's side. You certainly have to have good, quality people across the board, and I think we do. I think it's evident by the way these guys are stepping in and playing for us when they're called upon. It does [give us comfort] because we consider all of our guys starters or potential starters."
On the offensive and defensive line play against Oklahoma State:
"I think it was the difference in the football game. Of course, that's something that everybody emphasizes, but if you can win up front on both sides of the ball, you have a good chance to win the game. I thought our O-line was tremendous. The D-line, I mean, those guys were relentless. I thought they played extremely hard and kept a lot of pressure on [Mason] Rudolph and [J.W.] Walsh when he was in there. It's just a testament to them. I think they stepped up to the plate and delivered."
On how they'll prepare for TCU and what they expect from them:
"We're preparing just like always. Every time we play any Big 12 opponent, it's going to be a hard-fought game and this is certainly going to be no different. We've had some great games with TCU over the last five or six years, and that's because they're a really good football team. They do a great job, work extremely hard, and are really well-coached and well-disciplined. That makes it a really good football game. The implications to us are that we're trying to get back into the Big 12 hunt and trying to have another championship banner around here; then the bowl game implications are looming pretty large also. It's no different than the previous 10 games. You have to play your best every week in order to win."
On if they're preparing for playing against TCU's Trevone Boykin or their backup QB:
"You have to [prepare for Trevone Boykin]. I don't know exactly what his status is. But if there's a train, who's the guy who gets it going? The conductor? I would list him as the conductor of the train. He's a great football player, a tremendous athlete, a great leader ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" I would say he's the spirit of their team offensively. So you have to prepare for him. The other two guys certainly did a good job the other night, so they're certainly capable. I think that's a testament to Coach [Gary] Patterson and their staff for the recruiting they've done over the last few years ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" that they have guys who can step in and keep it going ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" because that was a really valiant effort they gave up at Oklahoma against what we know is a really good football team."
On how the team responded from the loss and the tough late-season schedule:
"We do like the fact that it is late in the season and we're still in the hunt. That is a tribute to our players, it's a tribute to our program because, as we know, it's hard for everyone to look at you and for you to deliver week after week after week after week. It's tough. It's hard in this business. So for our team to get to this point - of course we haven't done anything yet, we haven't finished - but at least up to this point, we're still standing pretty solid. Playing TCU late in the season, I mean we have no control over that. Would I prefer to maybe split up some of these games? I mean, yeah, no question. But I don't remember getting that text asking me what I wanted to do. And I don't think [Baylor Director of Athletics] Ian [McCaw] did either. [The conference] deals you your hand and you play. So we're playing it, and we're going to play it well, too. We're excited about where we're at as a football team right now."
On KD Cannon winning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week:
"His buddy in the room with him allowed him to have that much success ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" Corey Coleman. Because he opened up a lot of things for us the other night. Without question, both in the run game and the throwing game. He created some individual coverages for KD and Jay Lee that certainly allowed us to do some things we hadn't done up until that point. So that's that, aside from the fact that KD and Jay Lee are exceptional football players that really game up on game day. So I was really happy for KD. He's had about a month of really good practices. The thing we have to keep remembering is that he's a true sophomore - he's a 19-year-old guy. He's really had a fast track here over the past 20 months, and he's certainly delivered a lot for us in that short amount of time."
On how Chris Johnson was able to play so well when he was called upon:
"The thing you love about Chris is his humility. Just very humble, never changing, he's going to be the same, day in and day out, whether it's really good or not so good. That's the mark of a true champion and a true leader - that you're going to be the same through the good and the not so good. I think his parents have done a great job of raising him to have a lot of confidence in himself no matter what the situation, and that's certainly benefiting us at this time."
On coming in to start the second half in last week's game at Oklahoma State:
"I was a little bit nervous at the time, and at the same time anxious. [This week] I'm just given more time to get more in sync with [the first team offense], but just having this week to get some time with them will help out a lot."
On his strategy against TCU:
"I'll be smart, but I'm still going to be aggressive with the ball. Situationally, when I need to go get the first down, I'm going to go get it. When I'm at the goal line, I'm going to go get it. That's just the mentality I'm going to go for."
On being called to play at quarterback against OSU:
"It meant a lot at the moment, but most of all the part that meant the most to me was having my teammates there for me at that time. Just knowing they had the confidence in me to go out there and perform is what really meant the most to me. I'm glad we got the win as a team. That was a good feeling to go out there on the road and win in Stillwater against a really good Oklahoma State team, but knowing that those guys were there for me and believed in me meant the most out of anything."
On waiting his turn at quarterback:
"Since I've stepped on campus, I've wanted to play. You just have to wait your turn sometimes. All the quarterbacks that came through Baylor had to do that, so that's just part of the game. So, just having the opportunity ÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢' ¬" I was glad that it came, and I just wanted to go out there and perform."
On having this week to practice:
"It's just getting more opportunities and more time to get more in sync with those guys. It's definitely different from just jumping in the middle of a game like that without practicing much with them. So having this week to really get some time with them will help a lot."
On Chris Johnson:
"Chris always stays ready. He's really humble and never complains about anything. He's very mature and he just sat back and waited his time. When your number is called, you just have to be ready, and he was ready."
On getting double and triple teamed:
"It's really frustrating, but I'm a team player. If I can get three guys on me and open up the running game and [open chances up] for KD and Jay Lee, that's good. They deserve everything they're getting. I'm proud of those two especially."
On TCU:
"We treat it like every other game. But it's toward the end of the season, so we're just trying to maintain and get the Big 12 championship. We're ready to rock and it's going to be an exciting game."
On adapting to new quarterbacks:
"We just executed the plan. We really don't care who is back there because we know whoever it is, they're going to do a great job. So we just got in there and played really, really well."
On Chris Johnson:
"He didn't surprise me at all. He wouldn't be here if he was not a good quarterback. All the guys we have here wouldn't be in their position if they weren't really, really good at what they do. Chris did a heck of a job. We couldn't ask for anything more."
On TCU:
"It's just the next opponent on our schedule. We look at it as a faceless opponent. We're preparing for them just like we would any other week."
On TCU QB Trevone Boykin and TCU's other injuries:
"We're prepared for everything they can throw at us. If they don't play, we'll adapt to that, but right now we're preparing for everything."
On success against OSU:
"Once we stop the rushing attack, they become really predicable as far as their passing game. That was one of our main points going into the game."
On last year's outcome against TCU:
"It was one for the ages. That was a great game, but it's a new year. We're past it now. It's a new week, new team. We didn't really think about it going into this week. It's a new challenge."
On expectations for Friday's game:
"The game is probably going to be chippy, but we have to be prepared. We know how they like to play, and we'll be ready."
On teammate Chris Johnson:
"[Strength] Coach Kaz [Kazadi] says there's no such thing as a backup here, so when your guy [in front of you] goes down, you have to step up and have no drop off. Chris played awesome. He gave life to our team. He sparked us, and he was a great playmaker out there running around, getting yards and first downs. He was fun to watch."
On confidence after losing to Oklahoma:
"We had a chip on our shoulder. We had to prove people wrong because people were already writing us off after that loss. We wanted to prove people wrong about that and show up at Stillwater ready to knock off an undefeated team."
On TCU:
"It's just like every other week. These past two games were big games, so we'll be ready to go. It's a fast turnaround so it's going to be fun. It'll be a fun atmosphere."
