After a win that was not for the faint of heart, the Baylor soccer team (6-4-1, 1-0-0) will visit Iowa State (5-6-0, 0-2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Cyclones Soccer Complex in Ames, Iowa.
"They (Iowa State) are a tough team. They are a good, blue collar, hardworking team in every position. That is something we are used to, (because) we are that kind of same way," Baylor head coach Paul Jobson said. "(Coach Tony Minatta) has done a good job of continuing to bring in good players. They beat a top 25 team (Pepperdine) earlier in the year, so they know they can beat anybody, too."
Freshman Jackie Crowther scored a golden goal in the 94th minute of a 1-0 overtime victory over Oklahoma State last Friday in the Bears' Big 12 opener. She also nabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, becoming the third straight Baylor freshman to claim the award, following Sarah King and Lauren Piercy.
"We play a lot of freshmen, so I think we have an advantage in that award. There have been weeks when there were freshmen competing for that award even within our team," Jobson said. "We have a young team. It's not a surprise we've been getting that award. I am proud of the way they've been able to step up and make an impact on the program."
While the freshmen have proven to be key cogs to the team's current six-game winning streak, the Bears proved they could pull out a big win even without two of them on the field. Piercy had to sit out the OSU game after getting a red card in the previous game, and the attacking unit was also missing Julie James because of an injury.
"This weekend proved that even more, that you could be down two players that play a lot of minutes, contribute a lot, and still beat a top team. It gives us a lot of confidence," Jobson said.
On their last trip to Ames, the Bears had a commanding edge in shots (21-7), shots on goal (9-4) and corner kicks (12-1). But the Cyclones pulled out a 1-0 victory when they scored a goal with just 23 seconds left in the first overtime period.
"That's the crazy thing about our game, you can dominate a team and still lose," Jobson said. "We knew that was possible against Oklahoma State. We were outshooting them and outplaying them in a lot of ways, but we knew they just needed one opportunity and the game could be over."
Iowa State opened league play with road losses at TCU (5-0) and Oklahoma (3-0) and has played just one of its first 11 games this season at home, falling to North Dakota State, 3-2.
"They're going to be excited about being at home in front of their home crowd," Jobson said. "There will be some emotional things that they will be riding on as well."
While the Bears are playing in a drastically different climate â '¬" the temperature in Ames will dip into the 30s overnight â '¬" Jobson said the team hasn't been affected by "outside factors."
"When we were in Colorado and the sun went down, it was 40 degrees, and did not affect our girls at all," Jobson said. "We played in altitude, and it did not affect our girls at all. They are a pretty resilient group that does not let outside factors affect them at all, which is pretty unusual for a young team."
Baylor goes back on the road next weekend to face Kansas (5-4-1, 0-0) before returning home to host Oklahoma (7-4-1, 1-0-1) and 15th-ranked Texas Tech (7-1-3, 0-0-1) Oct. 16-18 in the Bears' first two-game weekend in a month.
