THE RUNDOWN
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - After spending the weekend in California, the Baylor men's tennis team wrapped up its participation in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club Sunday.
Playing in the singles main draw semifinals, No. 1 seeded and fifth-ranked Julian Lenz dropped a three-set decision to UCLA's Dennis Mrktchian, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3.
BU's other two players still in action both played in the consolation semifinals. Diego Galeano recorded a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Nolan Paige of Stanford to advance to the final. However, due to travel arrangements that match went uncontested. Meanwhile, Juan Benitez faltered against USC's Connor Farren, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinal round.
HIGHLIGHTS
? The loss snaps Lenz's seven-match win streak, which dated back to Nov. 7, 2014. ? Baylor's players went a combined 15-8 in singles action on the weekend.
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor returns to Waco to open its dual-match season Wednesday against No. 11 Illinois at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The match begins at 2 p.m., but the first 300 fans through the door will receive a free t-shirt. Free hot chocolate will also be provided at the match.
