THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Baylor men's tennis junior
Julian Lenz picked up another victory to reach the semifinals of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup singles main draw at the Sherwood Country Club Saturday.
The No. 1 seeded and fifth-ranked Lenz bested No. 88 Martin Redlicki of UCLA, 6-3, 7-5, in his lone singles match of the day.
BU's other three players in the singles quarterfinals all came up short. The 121st-ranked Felipe Rios dropped a 6-4, 7-6(4) decision to No. 68 Roberto Quiroz of USC, Max Tchoutakian faltered against UCLA's Dennis Mkrtchian, 6-4,1-6, 7-6(3) and Mate Zsiga was unable to pull the upset over eighth-ranked Jonny Wang of USC, 6-1, 6-2.
In consolation singles play, Juan Benitez upset Stanford's 75th-ranked David Hsu, 6-2, 6-3 and Diego Galeano recorded a three-set triumph over UCLA's Joseph DiGuilio, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 as both Bears reached the semifinals.
All three of Baylor's doubles tandems won their opening matches before bowing out in the quarterfinal round.
Benitez and Zsiga dispatched of Stanford Yale Goldberg and David Wilczynski, 7-5, before falling to USC's Tanner Smith and Wang, 6-3.
Lenz and Rios tallied a 6-1 triumph against USC's Nick Crystal and Thibault Forget, but then dropped a 6-4 decision to Diguilio and Karue Sell.
Galeano and Vince Schneider produced a 6-3 victory over Robert Stineman and Anthony Tsodikov of Stanford, but then did not play their next match due to injury.
WHAT'S NEXT
Play continues at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Sunday with singles consolation action starting at 11 a.m. CT and singles semifinal main draw play to begin at 11:30 a.m. CT. Lenz will face UCLA Mkrtchian, while Benitez takes on USC's Connor Farren and Galeano battles Stanford's Nolan Paige.
