Jan. 16, 2015 WACO, Texas - Baylor has hired former All-Pro cornerback and NFL assistant Cris Dishman as assistant coach, Art Briles announced Friday among several staff updates.
Dishman, a 13-year NFL veteran and two-time Pro Bowler, has spent the last decade coaching, including the 2013 season assisting at Baylor. He will coach the safeties for the back-to-back Big 12 champions in Waco.
"We're excited about Cris Dishman being our safeties coach," Briles said. "He'll provide passion, knowledge and eagerness to continue Baylor's climb to an elite level."
Dishman coached for the San Diego Chargers from 2008 to 2012, assisting with the secondary. Prior to the Chargers, he coached two seasons at Menlo College in Northern California, where he was the defensive backs coach and later the defensive coordinator.
From 2005 to 2008, Dishman spent time coaching with the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins and Chargers as part of the NFL's minority coaching fellowship program. He spent the 2005 season coaching DBs for the Berlin Thunder of the NFL Europe League.
The Louisville, Ky. native played collegiately at Purdue, where he earned 1987 All-Big Ten honors as a senior under current Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett and also ran for the Boilermakers' track team.
Dishman was a fifth-round draft choice of the Houston Oilers in 1988 and played 13 seasons in the NFL, including stops at Washington, Kansas City and Minnesota. He retired in 2000 with 43 career interceptions and three touchdown returns.
His best NFL season was in 1991 with Houston when he made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams. That year, Dishman caused turnovers in seven straight games and finished with six interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was also a Pro Bowler in 1997 with Washington.
Dishman replaces Brian Norwood, who left Baylor after seven seasons to accept the co-defensive coordinator position at Tulsa.
In other off-season staff moves, Baylor promoted Kendal Briles to offensive coordinator (replacing Philip Montgomery, who left to become head coach at Tulsa) and Tate Wallis to receivers coach. The younger Briles, who had previously served as passing game coordinator and receivers coach, was honored as the 2013 (Rivals, Scout, 247Sports) and 2012 (Scout) Big 12 Recruiter of the Year. Briles began his new duties as play-caller at the 2015 Cotton Bowl.
Wallis, a former quarterback at SMU, is in his fifth season at Baylor and was promoted from assistant director of operations. Running backs coach Jeff Lebby was promoted to passing game coordinator and offensive recruiting coordinator.
Four were added to the operations staff, including three former NFL players Joe Jon Finley (offensive quality control), Brodney Pool (special team quality control) and former Baylor great Dominique Zeigler (player development). Michael Anthony was hired as an offensive analyst with the operations staff.
Baylor finished the 2014 season ranked seventh nationally, the highest final rank in school history, and won a second consecutive Big 12 championship.
