VB drops matches to LSU & UTSA in Roadrunner Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Baylor led two sets to one but ultimately fell to LSU in five sets Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in the Bears' second-straight match with the Tigers. LSU won 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11 in the two-hour and two-minute match.

Baylor (9-4) dominated the first set with a 25-15 win, but LSU evened the match with a 25-22 win in set two. The Bears bounced back and took a pivotal set three 25-22, but then LSU came back in set four breaking a 22-all tie with three kills to close the set. In the fifth set Baylor couldn't recover from holes of 5-1 and 9-4, respectively, and the Tigers improved to 4-4 on the season.

Andie Malloy had 18 kills while Katie Staiger and Laura Jones had 14 apiece in the loss for the Bears. Briana Holman had nine kills and a match-high 11 blocks for LSU.

HIGHLIGHTS
Andie Malloy had 18 kills and 10 digs for Baylor; giving her double-digit kills for the 12th time in 13 matches, and the junior's seventh double-double of the season.
Laura Jones had a season-high 14 kills on a .229 hitting percentage.
Katie Staiger had 14 kills, giving her eight matches out of the last nine with double figures in kills.
Sam Hill had a career-high 11 kills passing her previous career high of eight, achieved twice.
Amy Rosenbaum had 51 assists and her team hit .205; Rosenbaum has five matches this season with at least 50 assists.
• Five players had double-digit digs for the Bears with Hope Ogden leading the team with 16. She passed the 900-career digs mark in the match and carries 915 into her next match.
• Rosenbaum had a career-high six blocks, and Sam Hill's six were a season high.

THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UTSA snapped a 14-match losing skid to the Baylor volleyball team, and the Roadrunners defeated the Bears for the first time since Sept. 17, 1990. UTSA won 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 25-9 in front of 987 fans at the Convocation Center Saturday evening.

Dempsey Thornton had 21 kills including eight in the first set for the Roadrunners and hit .320 to lead the home team in victory. In the loss, Andie Malloy had 13 kills, Katie Staiger had 10, and Sam Hill had nine kills and a career-high eight blocks.

After dropping the first two sets, Baylor rebounded in set three jumping out to a 9-1 lead, and didn't look back for a 25-18 win. However, UTSA began the final set on an 8-0 run and held Baylor to single digits (25-9) in a set for the first time since No. 8 Texas did so Oct. 24, 2012.

HIGHLIGHTS
Andie Malloy had 13 kills on a .259 hitting percentage giving her double-digit kills for the 13th time in 14 matches.
Katie Staiger had 10 kills to give her nine matches in the last 10 with double-digit digs.
Sam Hill had a career-high eight blocks to go with nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage; she was named to the all-tournament team.
Amy Rosenbaum had 42 assists and was named to the all-tournament team.
