Dec. 8, 2014 WACO, Texas - For the second straight year, Baylor football led the conference in Associated Press (AP) All-Big 12 selections with 10, the organization announced Monday. The back-to-back Big 12 champions had a league-high five first-team choices, tied for the lead with four second-team selections and had the Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
After having a program-record 12 honorees last season, the Bears' 10 this year rank second all-time and marks the 11th straight season with multiple AP All-Big 12 choices - fourth straight with at least four.
Among BU's first-team offensive selections were tackle Spencer Drango and receiver Corey Coleman. One of four unanimous honorees on the entire list, Drango earned the accolade for the second straight year after being a second-team choice last season. The junior Outland Trophy semifinalist led all BU blockers with an 89 percent coaches grade through 11 games in an offense that leads the country in points (48.8) and yards (581.3) per game.
Coleman garnered the honor for the first time and is tied for the Big 12 lead in touchdown catches (10) while only playing nine games. He's third in the league with 107.7 receiving yards per game. So far in his breakout sophomore season, Coleman has career-highs in catches (57), yards (969), yards per catch (17.0), yards per game and touchdown catches.
The Bears' first-team defensive choices were tackle Andrew Billings, end Shawn Oakman and safety Orion Stewart. Billings ranks fourth among D-lineman in the league with 0.96 tackles-for-loss per game. The sophomore has career-highs in tackles (35), TFLs (11.5), sacks (2) and QB hurries (8).
Oakman earned the distinction for the first time. The junior Chuck Bednarik Award semifinalist leads the league with 1.54 TFLs per game and is third with 0.83 sacks per game. Thus far, he has career-highs in tackles (48), sacks (10), TFLs (18.5), QB hurries (9), fumbles forced (3) and fumbles recovered (3).
Stewart, a first-time All-Big 12 honoree, is third in the league with 0.33 interceptions per game. The sophomore has career-highs in tackles (71) and interceptions (4).
Baylor's second-team offensive honorees were running back Shock Linwood and quarterback Bryce Petty. Linwood received the accolade for the first time as he's second in the league with 102.2 yards per game and 16 touchdowns. The sophomore has career-highs in carries (240), yards (1,226), touchdowns (16) and yards per game.
Petty earned the honor for the second time after being the AP's choice for Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season. The Manning and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards finalist leads the league in touchdown-to-interception ratio (26/6) and is second with a 155.3 passing efficiency rating. The senior has a career-high in completion percentage (62.1) while going 234-for-377 with 3,305 yards (300.5/game) and 26 touchdowns.
The Bears' second-team defensive selections were linebacker Bryce Hager and punter Spencer Roth. Hager garnered the second-team honor for the third time in his career as he ranks fourth in the league with 8.4 tackles per game. The senior has his second season with 100 or more tackles (101) while he also has career-highs in TFLs (11) and interceptions (1). Additionally, he has two sacks and two forced fumbles.
Roth garnered the distinction for the second time after being a first-team choice last season. The senior is second in the league with 43.3 yards per punt. He has a career-high 19 punts inside the 20.
To wrap things up for the Bears, freshman linebacker Taylor Young was named Defensive Newcomer of the Year, marking the second player in program history to earn the honor (LB Joe Pawelek, 2006). Young has 77 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 4.0 sacks and two forced fumbles in 12 games and seven starts.
