WACO, Texas - Baylor's Jana Brusek became the first player to ever win both Big 12 Rookie of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors simultaneously, the league announced Monday. Brusek's 28 digs helped Baylor beat Texas Tech on the road Wednesday and led to two Big 12 weekly honors.
Brusek averaged seven digs per set in the four-set win for the Bears, and she added four assists in the win over the Red Raiders. The freshman from Chicago put up 28 of Baylor's 89 digs in the match and helped hold TTU to a .190 hitting percentage, which was 17 points below its season average.
Baylor's 89 digs in the four-set match were the third-highest total by any Big 12 team in a four-set match through matches of Nov. 2. Brusek's 28 digs in a four-set match were also third most by any player in the Big 12.
For the season, Brusek averages 2.33 digs per set and is second on Baylor's squad with 22 service aces.
Since the Big 12 introduced the Rookie of the Week award in the 2007 season, no player had ever won Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors.
Baylor plays at Kansas Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3 before returning home to play host to Oklahoma Saturday at 7 p.m.
