Oct. 6, 2014 Opening Statement:
"Our football team did a nice job Saturday. Not only just that game, but for the last three out of four weeks where we have been out on the road and fortunately came away with three victories. It's tough to do early in the season, particularly when you are still finding yourself as a football team and going into venues where people are excited that you are there. I'm proud of our football team and the way that they hung together over the last three weeks. They've kept us in the race, and I'm excited to be back at McLane Stadium on campus on the Brazos River. We can sleep in our own beds and eat our own food."
On the rivalry with TCU:
"We've been playing TCU since I was at Houston in 2003. We played them I think twice while I was there, because they were in and out of the conference. Since I've been here, we've played them five times. They're a really good football team. They're extremely well-coached. They've been good for a decade and a half, at least. Gary (Patterson) and his staff have done a great job. They've done a really good job since joining the Big 12 of morphing what their philosophy and schemes are on both sides of the ball. They've played to the level of the league. I commend them for that, I really do, because it is a different style of ball. You have to change your way of thinking. We're in for a tough game. They were good last year, just didn't show up in the win-loss column. They went to Kansas State and lost by two, went to Oklahoma and lost by three, Texas Tech may have beaten them earlier in the year by three in an overtime game, so they could've had a really good year last year. They're having a good one this year."
On losing Jamal Palmer to injury:
"It's a huge blow because he's a great player. He's a great teammate and smart guy. He's a quick-twitch guy that has played a lot of snaps for us the last three years. He played as a true freshman and played mostly kickoff. He played defensive end last year and was a spark every time he came in. He's done a tremendous job this year, so it is a blow. We'll try to counteract it with a couple of guys as we go along."
On Bryce's confidence against strong defenses:
"I'm one of those people who thinks (TCU's defense) is very good. I think Texas is very good defensively also. Confidence is not a factor at all with Bryce. You're not the reigning Player of the Year in the Big 12, an All-American and do the things that he has done then suddenly lose your confidence. He's a great football player and is highly confident. That's not even an issue or concern. We understand that as an offensive football team that we can't play at a certain level all the time. You just can't do it, but you do it as well as you can as long as you can. When you get into a situation where things aren't going as smoothly as they were previously, you find a way to win. That's what we tried to achieve Saturday. Bryce did a great job of engineering touchdown drives when we needed them to win the football game."
On the importance of special teams:
"I think everybody realized that Saturday how huge special teams are. Congrats to Terrell Burt for being named the Special Teams Big 12 Player of the Week. They should split the trophy in half and give Beau Blackshear part of it. It was a huge play there, without question. Spencer (Roth's) play on fourth down punt was a tremendous boost because three plays later we score and it's 14-0. In that game, a 14-0 lead is a lot different than 7-0. That's why it was so disheartening when we were not awarded the touchdown in the second quarter."
On preparing for Trevone Boykin:
"He's definitely a dual-threat guy. It helps a bunch (to play a similar quarterback in Tyrone Swoopes). The TCU program runs a little more than Texas does with Swoopes, as far as his run-read options. Swoopes runs a little more of a bootleg and what we call a power flip. (Boykin) is definitely a dual-threat guy as we know. We've played him for three years. He started against us in 2012, played a little bit last year and of course is their starter this year. He is a tremendous athlete that does a great job at the quarterback position."
On the offensive line and running game's performance:
"The offensive line did a great job without question. That's something that we had been stressing all year. I'm proud that those guys were able to get in the trenches and play tough for us to give us a chance to maintain possessions. The other day first downs were like touchdowns, if you had a 14 point lead. Shock (Linwood) had a few too many carries. I think about 28. I haven't really looked at stats. That's a few more than we'd like for him to have. The 5.3 yard average that you mentioned is what it should be. All that fell in line with what he and our offensive line did to help us be productive on first down."
On being able to win games different ways:
"Everything is ok as long as you are winning. That's the main thing. We just go into it doing what we think we have to do to win the football game. That's really all we are concerned with."
On Spencer Roth's fourth down conversion on the fake punt:
"My first thought was `Okay! Why not?' I liked it. It was a situation where we have talked to him about it in practice before. Like I've said, he's punted every punt for us since 2011. We have a lot of confidence and trust in him. He made a senior play. We went into the game saying that it was an old man's game. If you're old, like a fourth or fifth-year guy, then this is a good game for you. He stepped up and made a huge play for our football team and university at a critical time."
On what it means to be the highest-ranked Big 12 team:
"It doesn't mean anything. I just means that we've done ok up to this point. Like I've always said, we're in a week-to-week business. This week we have to play against a really good TCU football team at home."
On being a complete team on both sides of the ball:
"I hope that we are there. I think that Coach Montgomery and the offensive staff has done a great job of keeping us at a level where we are not one-dimensional. Coach Bennett and the defensive staff has done a great job of elevating that side of the ball with their style of play and the personnel on the field. I do think that we are getting closer to being the complete team that you always want to be. It's something that we strive for and will continue to strive for. Special teams without a question is a very critical part of every ball game."
On how TCU gives Baylor a hard time:
"It really has nothing to do with how they play. I think defensively they are always tough. I think that they are very well-coached, and always seem to have a very good plan going against us. At the end of the day it is all about us, it is all about Baylor. If we do the things that we are supposed to do, and execute well, starting with me, then the sky is the limit with this team. It does not really matter who we play."
On not throwing the deep ball against Texas:
"I think that goes back to - not the game plan - but the flow of the game, and how our guys upfront were feeling and their execution/production level. Every time we handed the ball off I felt like we got some momentum there, and picked up yards so it is just how the game flowed."
On what makes TCU unique and on his physical condition:
"Physically I am great. Everything is fine with the back. I really do not feel it anymore. As far as what they do, schematically and coaching wise they are very well coached and they fly around to the ball. When you have guys that play sound defense and fly around, it makes it tough."
On feelings from Roth's fake punt:
"Well shoot, after the game I told him that he won us the game there. I mean that was a heck of a play by him. My face kind of says it all because I had absolutely no idea, one: what he was doing, but then once I figured out he was trying to run it. Then I was trying to figure why he didn't try to get out of bounds after he was clearly past the first down marker, and I know he told you guys he didn't know where it was. I had to tell him that is the big orange thing on the sideline. Honestly, it was a crazy play by him, but plays like that you have to have during tough games. Again, I had no idea that he was going to do it, but I am glad that he did it, and it sparked a big momentum swing for us."
On Baylor now controlling its own destiny:
"Personally for me, I have always felt that it has been in our own hands because as long as you win it doesn't really matter what your rankings are. You will end up where you want to be as long as you keep winning. For myself and most of the guys, we do not really pay attention to anything because it is only going to frustrate you. At the end of the day we can only control what we can control, and that is how we play on the field, how we execute, and how we produce. Our job is to produce wins, and to do it in the fashion we want to do it. Again it is just about how we play."
On the rivalry that has grown between Baylor and TCU since being in the Big 12 together:
"Yeah, really even before, just every time we've played, it just kind of seems like we don't like each other. I guess that's the making of a rivalry. So it ought to be a great game. I think both teams kind of circle each other on the schedule as soon as it comes out, so it ought to be a good game."
On whether he was surprised that KD Cannon didn't play more, or if that was just part of the game plan:
"I don't really know. It's just kind of how the game went. We've got a ton of talent in that group, so it's kind of one of those things where whoever's got the hot hand is going to play. So it wasn't necessarily like `hey, you're not going to play this much,' or `you're going to play more,' or that kind of thing. It's just kind of how it went."
On this being only the second AP Top-10 meeting of all time in Waco:
"It's huge for us. It's exactly the stage we want to be. That's why we came here - to play big games. There's a lot on the line for us, as far as nationally and things like that, but at the end of the day, it's still another game on our schedule. So the goal doesn't change. We want to dominate and we want to win. It's good for us as far as we're getting there, making steps, making strides. It's just another part of it."
On his quote that his head was spinning after the Texas game:
"It was an in the moment kind of quote. Watching tape, everything that I saw on tape was exactly what I saw on the field. I think I was just searching for answers after the game. Defensively, they played a good game. As far as the flow of the game, it called for more runs and things like that. I was more or less disappointed in myself and how I played. I kind of hold myself to a high standard. But I guess how I said it wasn't the right way to say it."
On having an off day offensively but still being able to win by 21 points on the road:
"Exactly. It was just the ultimate team win. It really was. Hats off to really everybody that put on the green and gold that day. The defense played outstanding. The offensive line and running backs did a tremendous job as well. So like I said, it was an all-around team win and that's what's great about it. It's not just one or two people, like maybe before, that had to play extremely well for us to have a good game. Everybody is really good on this team now, so we kind of have each other's backs. Like I said, I didn't play real well Saturday, so I'm looking forward to this game to kind of set myself back straight. But again, the team played outstanding."
On Baylor receivers' talent (product of the offense or just finding the right guys):
"I think it's actually a lot of that. I think a little bit of everything you said kind of goes into that. It's gotta start with recruiting. Coach Briles and his staff do a great job of finding those guys-not only finding them, but developing them into what you guys see on the field. All year long, those guys are the hardest working group we have. So it's not unexpected, I guess, the production that they have, because they work so hard. So it's fun for me to get out there and roll with those guys. They make my job fun and they make it easy."
On if UT was a bit tougher than what Bryce had faced:
"All of us, we worked on them running a 3-man front, 3-3 stack and we saw every defense there was out there. We saw 3-3 stack, we saw a 4-3, we saw a 4-2, a 4-2-5 - they threw everything they had at us and we still were able to produce, and that was good."
On how big the upcoming game is:
"It's huge for us just because it's another game and the goal that we're trying to reach is to go out there and win every game. So that's why it's a big game."
On what it means to be the highest ranked Big 12 team at this point:
"It means a lot because being at Baylor that hasn't happened very often, but at the same time if you look at the games that happened last week, it doesn't mean anything. You've still got to win. If we continue what we're doing, we'll stay right there at the top and that's where we want to be."
On how the run game improved against Texas:
"We just came into the game knowing that how we performed last week against Iowa State, that we had to be better in the running game. That was our thing to do to be better than the last game."
On if they plan to continue running the ball against TCU like they did in the second half against Texas:
"We plan on doing that to every team we play because the run is going to open up the pass and the pass is going to open up the run. It just puts more pressure on the defense when you can have a running and a passing game."
On what this top-10 matchup against TCU means to him and the team:
"It means a lot. It is going to be a battle this week, so we plan on getting prepared for it."
On if he pays attention to the rankings:
"Oh yeah, I am pretty sure that every team and every football player looks at them, but you can't be satisfied with where they have you. We are not satisfied right now, but we just have to go out every week and prove ourselves."
On TCU's defense:
"Their DBs are really good. Their whole defense is good. I know one of their strong suits is their linebackers. They have some good linebackers and their D-line. They are really well-coached, so they are going to be disciplined, so we are going to just have to go out there and do what we do best."
On if he is concerned about them getting the passing game going again:
"We aren't too concerned about it. We just have to go out there and play the way we know we can play and just be at our high every game. We know teams are going to give us their best, so we have to just go out there and be at our best, and we can't worry about anything else."
On showing they could win in a different way against Texas:
"It was an ugly win, but hey at the end of the day we won. We didn't play like we wanted to in the first half, but there are two halves in football. We got together when we went in the locker room and told each other that we are better than this, so let's go and show it."
On how he decided to run the fake punt:
"The first time I saw it and I was on the sideline telling Jimmy Landes, my snapper, I was like `dude I could have run that'. Then running out there, I had no intentions of running the ball but then I saw that opening and I just took off."
On how quickly he had to decide whether to run it or kick it:
"You see me like take two steps and I am about to punt it, but then I just took off and I had no idea it was going to turn out like that."
On not knowing how far he had to run:
"I had no idea where the marker was. I was just trying to get as many yards as I could because if I didn't make that first down..."
On the top-10 matchup vs. TCU:
"It's going to be a big game. Knowing that TCU beat Oklahoma is just going to make it even bigger. It's going to be good to see what's going to happen."
On playing on the home field:
"At Baylor we've got the best fans in the country, and it's just going to be good to see all the green and gold. It's going to be good to see all that around all the purple."
On a changing perspective of Baylor offense:
"You could definitely say it's changing. I know a couple of my friends were just freaking out, thinking it was the worst thing in the world. It wasn't pretty, but that's okay because we kept it in line and went and got a win. It was a 21-point win. It's nice when you can put up 70 points, but we know realistically we're not going to be able to do that every week."
On what TCU did last year that BU needs to watch for on Saturday:
"They will be extremely sound schematically, fundamentally, technique-wise, offensively, defensively. Strictly what I'm focusing on as an offensive player is that they will be very good at knowing what they're doing. They know their identity and they understand it."
