Oct. 31, 2014 AUGUSTA, Ga. - For the second straight season, Baylor senior punter Spencer Roth was named one of 80 candidates for the 2014 Ray Guy Award, the Augusta Sports Council announced on Friday. The Ray Guy Award honors the nation's top collegiate punter.
Roth, a fourth-year starter from Knoxville, Tenn., has punted 31 times for 1,309 yards for an average of 42.2 yards per punt in Baylor's first seven games.
The senior had a season-long boot of 69 yards against West Virginia. He has 14 punts fair caught, 11 placed inside the 20-yard line and no touchbacks. He also has six 50-yard punts on the year.
Roth's career average of 43.51 ranks second all-time at BU. He is tied for third on the career list for 60-yard punts (eight) and eighth in career 50-yard punts (37). Roth, a 2013 All-American and consensus All-Big 12 first-team player, has 43 career games played.
Despite Baylor's nation-best offense not needing to punt often, Roth was a standout in his limited opportunities in 2013. He averaged 45.8 yards on 52 punts (2,379 yards), with four 60-yarders, 17 50-yarders, 17 inside-the-20, 20 fair caught and seven touchbacks on the season.
The award has been given annually since 2000. Baylor's Daniel Sepulveda is the only two-time winner of the award (2004 and 2006). Meanwhile, Roth's predecessor at BU, Derek Epperson, was a 2008 semifinalist for the honor and a three-time watch list member.
This candidate list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists on Nov. 14. Following the semifinalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be selected on Nov. 24. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.
The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN.
As a team, Baylor is off to a 6-1 and 3-1 start in Big 12 action. This week, Baylor is ranked No. 12 in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. The Bears debuted at No. 13 in the first edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings released on Tuesday.
Baylor will now host Kansas on Saturday for Homecoming. That game will be televised at 3 p.m. by FS1.
