Lupieri Leads MT At USTA/ITA Regional Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -
Baylor men's tennis senior Tony Lupieri was part of all four victories for the Bears on Sunday at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The senior from Zagreb, Croatia, produced two singles wins and then partnered with Felipe Rios to tally two more triumphs in doubles.

In singles, the 112th-ranked Lupieri dispatched of TCU's Guillermo Nunez, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the round of 16. He then won his third-straight match with an upset 6-4, 6-3 victory over 15th-ranked Shane Vinsant of Texas A&M to advance to the quarterfinals.

In doubles, the first-time partners of Lupieri and Rios bested Abilene Christian's Marco Bensley and Paul Domanski, 8-6, before downing Texas A&M's 37th-ranked duo of Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo, 8-7, to reach the quarterfinals.

Rios fell in singles action with a three-set loss to Srikar Alla of Rice in the round of 32, 6-7(0), 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, Vince Schneider couldn't upset 87th-ranked Arturs Kazijevs of SMU, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the round of 32.

Baylor's lone other doubles pairing of Diego Galeano and Schneider were beaten in the round of 16 by Michael Feucht and Nikita Lis of Lamar, 8-5.

Galeano also lost his singles consolation match, 6-4, 6-1, to Texas Tech's Connor Curry.

On Monday, Lupieri will face 43rd-ranked Felipe Soares of Texas Tech at 9 a.m. in the singles quarterfinals, while in the doubles semifinals Lupieri and Rios will take on TCU's fifth-ranked pairing of Nick Chappell and Will Stein at 1 p.m.
