ATHENS, Ga. - The 25th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 8 Duke in the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
The loss ended the season for the Bears who finished the year with a 19-12 mark. Duke now moves on to the tournament quarterfinals where it will take on top-seeded and top-ranked USC.
"I thought this team continued to fight, I asked them to keep working and get a little bit better. I challenged them to get better after we lost that match to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament, and they did, that's why we were here," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Duke was better than us, they focused better than we did up and down the line, I'm a little surprised, we were a little bit nervous, which I didn't expect. I thought we would come in here and swing for the fences but we weren't."
After winning doubles at courts two and three, the Blue Devils won five of six first sets en route to claiming the three points needed to win. Baylor took just one set on the day, freshman Diego Galeano won his first set on court five, 6-3.
Next up for the Bears are the NCAA Championship Singles bracket, May 23-28, freshman Mate Zsiga will compete in singles.
