WACO, Texas - In a men's tennis match between the Bears and the Bruins, it was the Bruins who prevailed when UCLA defeated Baylor at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday afternoon.

The fourth-ranked UCLA squad downed 39th-ranked Baylor, 6-1, halting the Bears' five-match win steak. With the loss, Baylor falls to 9-6 on the season while UCLA moves to 13-2.

UCLA swept all three doubles matches, on court two Alex Brigham and Marcos Giron got the first Bruin win with an 8-1 triumph over Marko Krickovic and Robert Verzaal. Next, Warren Hardie and Clay Thompson downed seniors Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro, 8-5. In the final doubles match on, 43rd-ranked Nick Meister and Adrien Puget defeated 78th-ranked Roberto Maytin and Mate Zsiga, 8-4.

UCLA, a squad with four ranked singles players, won five of six singles matches, three of which were in straight sets. Baylor's lone victor on the day was at the top spot when Zsiga, ranked No. 33, posted an impressive straight set win over the 53rd-ranked Thompson, 6-2, 6-1. With the win, Zsiga extended his win streak to six matches and raised his team-leading season record to 25-4, including a 7-4 mark vs. ranked opponents.

Meister, ranked No. 31, downed No. 82 Maytin, 6-3, 6-4, No. 105 Giron defeated Krickovic, 7-5, 6-0, and No. 54 Puget posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Verzaal. Baylor's Diego Galeano and Grangeiro, playing on courts five and six, respectively, each pushed their matches to three sets before going down to defeat. Galeano lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to Dennis Mkrtchian and Grangeiro fell to Maxime Tabatroung, 4-6, 7-6(6), 1-0 (9).

The Bears remain on the road as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on the 24th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m. (CT). Tennessee is coached by another former assistant coach under Baylor head coach Matt Knoll, Sam Winterbotham.
