WACO, Texas- Matt Knoll's Baylor men's tennis team got back in the win column with a 7-0 pasting of SMU at BU's Hurd Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
The victory snapped a four-match losing streak for the 41st-ranked Bears and raised their record to 5-5 while SMU dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
"We needed a win. I thought it was an overall good performance. I was proud of the way the guys came out and handled themselves in a professional manner. We need to build some momentum now, we have an opportunity to do so in the next couple of weeks," said Knoll.
The Bears only lost one match on the day and that was in a tiebreaker on court three of doubles. Roberto Maytin and Mate Zsiga, playing at No. 1 doubles, got the Bears off to a fast start with a quick 8-2 win over SMU's Mischa Nowicki and Pablo Perez-Esnaola. BU secured the doubles point with an 8-6 victory on court two by Marko Krickovic and Robert Verzaal. Seniors Kike Grangeiro and Julian Bley dueled to an 8-8 tie on No. 3 but fell in the tiebreak 8-6.
The Bears breezed through singles, claiming all six matches. Freshman Diego Galeano was first off the court when SMU's Nowicki retired due to injury in the second set. Galeano, playing at No. 4, took the first set 6-3 and was leading 3-0 in the second when play was halted. Krickovic earned Baylor's third point with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Arturs Kazijevs. Two minutes later, Maytin clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Gaston Cuadranti at No. 2 singles.
After dropping the first set of his match on court six, 6-4, Verzaal came out on fire and claimed the next two set and the match, 6-1, 6-1. Three minutes later, Grangeiro, playing on court five, closed out his two-set match, winning 6-3, 6-3.
After blanking Perez-Esnaola, 6-0, in the first set at the top court, the 28th-ranked Zsiga leapt out to a 3-0 second-set lead but lost the next six games to fall 3-6. Zsiga regained his momentum and blanked the SMU foe, 6-0, in the third set to claim the win.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 3 when they host St. Edward's at 10 a.m. and Laredo Community College at 5 p.m.
