WACO, Texas - The fifth-ranked Baylor's men's tennis team opens dual match competition this weekend when it hosts the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns and the eighth-ranked Florida Gators at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.
Baylor will take on the Ragin' Cajuns at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20 and match up against the Gators at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22.
The Bears are coming off a trip to Southern California where six student-athletes competed in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup. Freshman Mate Zsiga advanced to the singles quarterfinals and he and his partner Kike Grangeirowere eliminated in the tournament's doubles semifinals.
The 20th-ranked Zsiga leads the Bears on the season with a 14-3 singles record while junior Roberto Maytin, ranked No. 54, follows at 10-5 and another freshman, 52nd-ranked Lars Behlen, is 9-5. Freshman Marko Krickovicand Maytin are the Bears' lone ranked doubles team, the tandem is listed at No. 18.
Friday's match marks the Ragin' Cajuns' first competition of the spring season while Florida competed in the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships last weekend. The Gators are led by 69th-ranked Bob van Overbeek, a junior, No. 84 Spencer Newman, a sophomore, and 102nd-ranked sophomore Andrew Butz. Florida has two ranked doubles teams, Nassim Slilan and Billy Federhofer are listed at No. 4 and Overbeek and Butz are No. 25.
