WACO, Texas - Baylor competitive cheer lost to both Azusa Pacific and top-ranked Maryland in its final home meet of the season Thursday night at the Ferrell Center.

The Bears were unable to overcome an early deficit, placing third in the meet with a final score of 273.453. Maryland won the meet with 283.811 points and APU finished second with a final score of 277.328.

"I am proud of the girls," head coach Karry Forsythe said. "They really pulled through. We had some major adjustments this week. 23 freshmen makes it tough. I don't want the inexperience to wear on us all season, but it looks like at every meet they continue to get a little stronger, a little bit better, a little bit more prepared."

APU held a slim lead after Compulsories, scoring 39.32 points compared to Baylor's 39.12 and Maryland's 39.01.

Baylor rallied and outscored both teams in the Stunt event with a total of 28.86 points to Maryland's 27.94 and Azusa Pacific's 28.82. However, the Bears were unable to sustain their momentum in the Pyramid event, scoring 23.85 to Maryland's 29.125 and APU's 29.975.

APU held the lead at halftime with 98.115 points after taking both Compulsories and Pyramid, while Maryland was in second with 96.079 and Baylor in third with 91.83.

The visiting teams outscored the Bears in the next two events. APU took the Basket Toss event with 28.52 points to Maryland's 28.47 and Baylor's 28.45. Maryland won Tumbling and took the lead with 53.47 points to APU's 49.37 and Baylor's 47.61.

Maryland sealed its win by taking the Team Routine with 105.792 points over the Bears' 105.563 and Azusa Pacific's 101.323 to win the meet by 6.483 points over APU and 10.358 points over Baylor. Azusa Pacific placed second scoring 3.875 higher than Baylor.

More than 500 fans turned out to support the Bears in the final home meet of their inaugural season.

Baylor wraps up the regular season with a two-match road trip. The Bears travel to face Azusa Pacific on March 5 and No.2 Oregon on March 7.
