VB's King Earns Big 12 Weekly Honor

IRVING, Texas- Senior Allison King was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for her spectacular numbers over the past week, league officials announced Monday.
One of the all-time leading liberos in Big 12 history, King is being honored as the league's best defender for the first time in her career. In two matches last week, King racked up league-bests of 61 digs and 6.78 digs per set, while enjoying a perfect 1.000 reception percentage in 47 total chances.
King is the second Baylor player to receive a Big 12 weekly honor this season, as senior Briana Tolbert took offensive honors on Oct. 10. She is the first Baylor player to win the defensive award since Caitlyn Trice on Aug. 30, 2010. For the week, King is joined by offensive honoree Lisa Henning of Missouri and rookie honoree Tara Dunn of Oklahoma.
In a five-set win over Texas State, King racked up a career-high 34 digs, which is also the second-highest single-match total in the Big 12 this season. Three days later, King notched 27 digs in a four-set loss on the road at Missouri.
King's big numbers over the week put her season total at a league-leading 525 digs, and on pace to break the Baylor single-season record of 623, set last season by Trice. With five matches remaining, King could also challenge the Big 12 single-season record of 646, set by Iowa State's Ashley Mass in 2008. For the year, King is second in the Big 12 at 5.15 digs per set.
Over her career, King has a Baylor-record total of 1,982 digs, which also ranks her fourth in Big 12 history. She is just 50 digs behind the second-best all-time total of 2,032 by Kansas State's Angie Lastra from 2004-07.
Baylor will be back in action in Ferrell Center on Wednesday, Oct. 9, hosting rival Texas A&M at 7 p.m. The Bears will be looking to avenge a five-set loss to the Aggies earlier this season on the road.
