COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Roberto Maytin and freshman Mate Zsiga both advanced to quarterfinal action in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional at College Station, Texas on Saturday with two wins each.
The event is one of 12 regionals held around the country in the month of October with the singles and doubles champion from each site qualifying for the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The national tournament is slated for Nov. 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York.
Three of Baylor four players in Saturday singles action won their round of 32 matches in straight sets. Maytin downed Daniel Sanchez of TCU, Zsiga defeated Nathan Robinson of Texas A&M-CC and Lars Behlen beat Rice's Isamu Tachibana. The Bears' lone loser in the round was Marko Krickovic who dropped a tiebreaker first set to Texas' Soren Hess-Olesen, 7-6(4) and lost 6-2 in second set.
In round of 16 action, Behlen lost to the tournament's top-seeded player, Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar, 6-2, 7-5. Maytin, seeded No. 3, eased past UTA's Yauheni Takauleu, 6-4, 6-4. The fourth-seeded Zsiga played what proved to be the Bears' hardest match of the day, he dropped the first set to Texas A&M's Niall Angus, 6-2, but bounced back to take the second 7-5. In the deciding third set, Zsiga was leading 4-2 when Angus retired.
In doubles, the second-seeded duo of Maytin and Zsiga were pushed in both of their matches. After downing Mindaugas Celedinas/Soren Goritzka of UTA, 9-7, the tandem fell in quarterfinal action, losing to fifth-seeded Ben Chen and Daniel Whitehead of Texas, 9-8(4).
Action continues on Sunday with both Baylor singles players' quarterfinal matches beginning at 9 a.m.
