WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team (12-2-2, 4-1-1) scored two goals in the first 10 minutes en route to a 3-1 win over Missouri (10-6, 1-4) Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field. The win was the first over the Tigers since 2006 and the first over MU in Waco since 2000. BU also remains undefeated at home with an 8-0-1 record this season.
With their 12th win of the year, the Bears have the most victories since the 1999 team went 14-7-1. It is also their best mark through 16 games since the 1996 team was 13-2-1. The four conference wins equal last year's total and is the best record after six matches since the 1998 Big 12 Championship team was 5-0-1.
Dana Larsen registered two goals and an assist and now leads the team with eight scores on the year. Hanna Gilmore added her fourth goal of the season, while Lisa Sliwinski and Vic Hoffman each notched an assist.
"Our team was awesome tonight," head coach Marci Jobson said. "Dana had a great night and our defense shut down a pretty potent offense."
Baylor doubled Missouri's shot output, dominating the category 18-9.
The Bears struck just under two minutes into the game, as Larsen slipped a pass to Gilmore that led her to a one-on-one with the MU goalie. Gilmore calmly placed the right-footed shot low and to the near post for an early 1-0 lead.
Baylor doubled its lead in the 10th minute when Larsen received a cross from Hoffman that deflected to her feet where she blasted it in from three yards out.
Missouri cut the lead in half in the 51st minute, as a Danielle Nottingham corner kick was struck with her left foot and curled in the back post to make it a 2-1 game.
But the Bears answered right back just four minutes later when Larsen struck again. Sliwinski sent in a cross that was two-touched by Larsen and slotted to the right side with her left foot for the 3-1 advantage.
The victory puts Baylor in a tie with Oklahoma State for first in the Big 12 standings with 13 points.
"We can enjoy this win for a short time and then it's back to work," Jobson said. "We have to focus on the next game and keep moving forward."
Baylor will play its final non-conference game of the season, hosting Jackson State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day. Festivities for the seven seniors will begin immediately following the game.
