WACO, Texas - Following two more singles matches on day two of the HEB Baylor Men's Invitational, sophomore Roberto Maytin is the last Baylor player standing in the singles A draw after opening the tournament with four consecutive straight-set victories at the Baylor Tennis Center.

On Saturday, the Valencia, Venezuela, native, punched his ticket into the main draw semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over eighth-seeded Rifat Biktyakov of Oklahoma State in the round of 16 and a 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over teammate Julian Bley. Maytin will now face New Mexico State's Arthur Surreaux at 9 a.m. on Sunday with a chance to play in the finals on the line.

"It was a good day for Roberto," head coach Matt Knoll said. "The guy is playing very well. It is really gratifying because we made some technical changes on a couple of his strokes and it is really paying off. He is really improving his game. It has flat out made him better."

Bley met Maytin in the quarterfinals, after the junior from Veitshoechheim, Germany, throttled Oklahoma State's Eric West, 6-3, 6-0, in round of 16 action. Senior John Peers, also reached the quarterfinals by dismissing Laurent Montoisy of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 6-1, 6-2. The 28th-ranked and fifth-seeded Peers would then fall to 22nd-ranked and third-seeded Jeff Dadamo of Texas A&M, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Baylor's fourth participant in the round of 16 singles, Kike Grangeiro was beaten by Soren Goritzka of TCU 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. The loss knocked Grangeiro out of the singles draw as he ends with a 2-1 record for the weekend.

In doubles action, the 57th-ranked and sixth-seeded duo of Maytin and Peers will play in the tournament's finals tomorrow as the Baylor duo romped past the 34th-ranked and fourth-seeded Texas Tech tandem of Raony Carvalho and Vitor Manzini, 8-2. The pair of Bears opened the day by downing Jonathon Chang and Phillip Seifert of Rice, 9-7, in the quarterfinal round. Maytin and Peers will face eighth-seeded Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyakov in the doubles finals after the first round of singles matches on Sunday.

"Honestly, we are happy for them, but I am not surprised," Knoll said of Maytin and Peers. "I knew that was going to be a really good doubles team for us and so it is just great that they are getting to play some matches and put together a little bit of a run here. They felt really good about their last match and their confidence is just growing."

Baylor's other doubles team of Bley and Grangeiro was defeated by Jim Brouleau and Surreaux of New Mexico State in quarterfinal action, 8-5.

In consolation play in the A draw, Sergio Ramirez won his way into the semifinal round with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Aaron Dujovne of Purdue and a three-set, come-from-behind victory over 120th-ranked and seventh-seeded Alexey Grigorov, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8. Ramirez will face Niall Angus of Texas A&M at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to the consolation finals.

"Sergio got his first win over a ranked opponent at Baylor and that is a big deal for him," Knoll said. "I think that is something he can build on the rest of the fall."

Meanwhile, Robert Verzaal got his first on court victory as a Bear with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Aurelien Tave of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. However, the freshman lost his next match to Sergio Wyss of Maryland, 6-2, 6-4.

In the consolation bracket of the B draw Chris Gordon was knocked out of the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Cameron Nash of TCU.
