MIDLAND, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team finished up play in its first fall tournament of the season as senior Sergio Ramirez bowed out of the singles draw in quarterfinal play and the Bears' lone doubles team suffered a loss in the semifinals of the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

Ramirez continued his strong play from day one of the tournament with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win over Clifford Marsland of Tulsa in round of 16 action. However, in quarterfinal play Ramirez lost his first match of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Dean Jackson of San Diego.

"Honestly, I would say the first match was the best Sergio has played since he has been at Baylor," assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "He really competed hard and improved on a lot of things from yesterday. In the second match, Dean Jackson is as good of talent as there is in college tennis and Sergio hasn't been with guys of that level in a while. He just has to sustain his level of focus to play at that high level for a whole match. He is not quite there yet, but it is just around the corner."

In doubles, the pair of Ramirez and Robert Verzaal got a win by default in their first match after Jackson and Patrick Pohlman of San Diego were unable to play the match. In their second match of the day, the Baylor duo fell 8-6 to Harry Fowler and Peter Frank of Rice.

The next action for the team will be at the Baylor Tennis Center as the Bears host the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate, Fri.-Sun., Sept. 24-26.
